Going to consolidate things here so it's easier for me to find.

(originally in the Whiteout photo thread)

Just got a Whiteout on Saturday. Went through this thread and found it hard to believe nobody has done this yet
edit: in this thread, with their own car.

Don't worry. Haven't done it. It's only a quick and cheesy pchop.
I know it's supposed to be refined and modest, only on the door panel previous to the handle.
It's not a panda though, and there was this huge billboard to get enthused over.

That's Seattle over there.

06-02-2013 San Juan deFuca Hwy 112
Took a drive yesterday out Washington Hwy 112 along San Juan deFuca to the NW most point of the state.
It's a very tight road that demands some attention, but supplies some great scenery. Highly recommended.

Out near the very west end, a view to the south down the Washington coast.

This is what the road looks like mostly.

Took a 1/2 mile hike from the end of the road to the corner of the state.
This is Tatoosh Island even further out to the north west.

holy crap, where did you find a fujiwara tofu shop sticker that big?!

NLSP 01-25-2015 03:47 AM

Hwy 112 looks fantastic, thanks for the recommendation. Looking forward to trying that in the summer months.

I'm also going to try the North Cascade Hwy (Route 20), seems to be a highly recommended twisty route. Any other recommendations for twisty roads that's somewhat close to the Canadian border?

bcj 01-25-2015 01:14 PM

@ducky369 - Photoshop. I've amended that photo with more text.
@NLSP - Mt. Baker would be closest I suppose. Most of the Frasier valley is squared off farm roads.
Hwy 20 east of Diablo is mostly sweepers rather than twisty. Scenic more like. Would make a nice loop back through Hope BC.

edit: Wow! Stars on the Members Forum list page. Thanks

Took a drive up WA 112 past Port Angeles today.
Always meant to, but never got around to taking shots at Salt Creek State Park.
They've got a set of WWII Naval Defense gun emplacements that you can drive through.
I think it's cool, anyway. The park is free for day use so you don't need the pass
(at this time of year, don't know about summer).

Day trip out to Lake Wynoochee Wed. May 20, 2015.
It's on the south side of Olympic Nat. Park. Access is north from Montesano on Hwy 12 / 8.

http://www.eskimo.com/~johnsen/car/N...ympic/wyn2.jpg

There's active logging going on up there, so keep an eye out for bark chunks on the road as well as log trucks.
Posted speed is 40 / 45 and the trucks mostly keep up and hustle it along.
On the way back one pulled out just before me so I dialed it back a couple mph and let him trundle on ahead.
It's a good pace for the road and I didn't mind looking at the scenery.

Late September 2015 Oregon Road Trip

Decided to take advantage of the continuing good weather Monday 9/28/15 to launch out on a road trip to do McKenzie Pass (OR 242) in the mid Cascades.

OR 126 up the valley
http://www.eskimo.com/~johnsen/car/N...2015/or126.png

Not many pictures. Too vanilla down I5 to Eugene then west on OR 126 to Belknap Springs where 242 starts. Then too busy. The smell of the pine and cypress going up the valley was intoxicating.

Roads - OR 242, 126, 20
https://www.eskimo.com/~johnsen/car/...Kenzie_map.png

The road is narrow, but paved well though there are many 4 to 6 inch drops off the edge. Pay attention. Deer, elk and bicyclists may be frequently encountered. I lucked out and only had one motor home that let me by, then it was clear all the way to the top at the observatory.

I took it slowly and concentrated on precision rather than speed. It's heavily forested and most of the tightly linked corners are blind. Never can tell what's just the other side of that bank. Very much worth the trip down from Seattle. Would recommend it thoroughly.

The lava fields are still impressive as ever and the observatory is worth a stop to stretch and have a look around. A number of bicycle groups and singles stopped there as well. Most of them seemed to be riding out from Sisters and back as the road east of the pass is not as steep as the west side and is wider with better shoulders and longer sight lines. From there I continued east to stop overnight in Sisters.

The Sisters
https://www.eskimo.com/~johnsen/car/...he_sisters.png

The Lava Beds
https://www.eskimo.com/~johnsen/car/.../lava_beds.png

Tuesday, I headed back west on OR 126. Long straight stretches through Lodgepole Pine forests that have had under story fires through them within the last few years. Nearing Santiam Pass the view became more open due to fires that had crowned through and killed many of the still tall trees. Lots of huge peaks and geological wonders including the Hoodoo Ski Area.

Down the west side of the pass I turned off on OR 20 (Santiam Highway). There was a sign warning of 11 miles of 6% grade. They mean it. The roadbed is a little wider than McKenzie, but equally curvaceous. More linked turns through old growth timber nearly all the way down to Sweet Home. My ears were popping all the way. It goes down a lot. Some roadbed sloughing and patches near the bottom with fresh lumpy asphalt. Another one I'd come back to do again. No corner parkers all the way today too.

Once I got down to Lebanon I came back down the valley through Scio, Stayton and Silverton where I picked up OR 213 through more farmland to Oregon City where I hit 205 back over the bridge to I5 and back home.

Great weather, roads and scenery. I've still got Detroit, Aufderheide, Ripplebrook and several others in the area to try out the 86 on. Get some of this.

bcj 05-03-2016 01:16 AM

4-02-2016
The weather finally cleared up and I needed a road trip.
Decided to head out to La Push on the ocean side of the Olympic Peninsula.
On the way up through Poulsbo the highway reader board said that the Hood Canal bridge would be opened for maintenance for a few hours.
Headed south instead. It would be about the same distance either way.

When I got to Forks, I et a Sullys Burger. It's the spot Mick Dodge stops off on the north edge of town for a gut bomb.

http://www.eskimo.com/~johnsen/car/N...rks_Sullys.jpg

After that I headed down the spur to La Push past all the glitter monster stuff and took a panorama of La Push Harbor.

http://www.eskimo.com/~johnsen/car/N...Harbor_pan.jpg

Afterwards I continued clockwise around the Olympics. They were done with the bridge fixings and all went rather smoothly.
Spent about 9 hours all together with stops and poking around.

Took a drive down to Tumwater, Washington to tag the old Olympia Brewery location.

bcj 09-15-2016 10:44 PM

The weather was too nice to waste this week (2016/09/13) so I had to take
another Oregon road trip.

Google Map Route: First Day
http://www.eskimo.com/~johnsen/car/N...r/day1_map.png

Stared up Germantown Road from OR 30 up over the top to Hillsboro.
Got stuck in a traffic jam for a while on 217 but finally got to 99W.
Have not been down that road for decades and wanted to see how it had changed.

The whole area has been built up dramatically all the way to McMinnville.
Beyond that it becomes decidedly rural.

Turned off to 223 at Rickreall up against the east side of the coast ranges.
Between Pedee and Kings Valley there are some very nice corners.

At Philomath I turned on to 34 that eventually ends in Waldport on the
coast.
Going over Mary's Peak the road turns into some very tight winding linked
corners, many of them blind.
Watch out for bicycles and log trucks. The trucks are moving fast.

http://www.eskimo.com/~johnsen/car/N...or/01_or34.jpg

At Alsea the road hugs the riverbank through Tidewater then to the back bay
part of Waldport.

http://www.eskimo.com/~johnsen/car/N...rt_backbay.jpg

I didn't get the camera out until around here.
The pics I did get are the relatively straighter parts of the roads.
The tight corners didn't get coverage because I was busy driving.

A cruise up 101 to Newport for the evening.
Got some shots at Yakina Head Park of the jetties that show up on the new
Discovery Channel show and the Newport Bridge.

Day two I went north the back way through Siletz up to Lincoln City.

Google Route Map: Second Day
http://www.eskimo.com/~johnsen/car/N...r/day2_map.png

After that more 101 to Pacific City and Cape Lookout.
Lookout had great corners up one side and down the other.

http://www.eskimo.com/~johnsen/car/N...229_siletz.jpg

http://www.eskimo.com/~johnsen/car/N...pe_lookout.jpg

http://www.eskimo.com/~johnsen/car/N...pe_lookout.jpg

Continued on to Cape Mears. The map shows a loop through the park, but it was
closed at the park, so I had to backtrack a bit to get out to Tillamook.

http://www.eskimo.com/~johnsen/car/N...cape_mears.jpg

From there, At Garibaldi, I turned onto Miami River Road which is narrow,
contorted and goes through some great farmland and over the hills to Nehalem.
Part way through I met a double trailer fuel truck hauling balls the other
direction. Whew.
There were numerous log trucks, but those are expected. The fueler on such
a tight road was a suprise.

http://www.eskimo.com/~johnsen/car/N...iami_river.jpg

http://www.eskimo.com/~johnsen/car/N...iami_river.jpg

http://www.eskimo.com/~johnsen/car/N...or/29_or53.jpg

Turned off 26 at the Nehalem River to Jewel and 202 then Mist. Then 47 goes
over Mist Mt. with more serious switchbacks up one side and down the other.

http://www.eskimo.com/~johnsen/car/N...38_mist_mt.jpg

http://www.eskimo.com/~johnsen/car/N...39_mist_mt.jpg

There's a great view of Mt Hood from the top, but I didn't stop there. Too
many people filling up the available pullouts and gawking.

One tank of gas down to Newport and filled up again when I got home. 9
gallons. I didn't note how many gallons in Newport, but it was about the same.

bcj 03-26-2017 09:17 PM

Nice day out at the 86 Sessions meet at LeMay car museum in Tacoma.
Lots of nice cars in addition to an LFA under glass in the basement.

On the way in I stopped off on S Tacoma Way at the intersection of I5 and SR16 to get a location shot of "World Famous Bob's Java Jive" coffee pot diner. Now closed but not forgotten.

Tuesday May 9, 2017

Started out from Seattle in the AM.
All the I90 onramps were stuffed solid, so I took Rainier Ave down around the south end of the lake, then Rt900 from Renton to Issaquah.
Got gas to get over the pass and proceeded to Vantage on the Columbia River.

Turned on to Hwy 26 east on the route I used to take to school at Pullman.
It's pretty flat and relatively featureless.

http://www.eskimo.com/~johnsen/car/N...snek/Hwy26.jpg

Don't know why people seem to think the twins get blown around more than most cars. Of course it will be affected. Just take control and deal with it. No worse than a van or a Malibu.

Got a SWIRLY THING ALERT!!! Didn't crash. Meh.

http://www.eskimo.com/~johnsen/car/N...irly_thing.jpg

After passing Pulman, I headed south on Wawawai road.

http://www.eskimo.com/~johnsen/car/N...lsnek/wai1.jpg

It dives down into the snake river canyon and follows the river along some impressive lava rock bluffs to Clarkston / Lewiston.

http://www.eskimo.com/~johnsen/car/N...lsnek/wai2.jpg

Spotted the Snake Riverboat along the way, then spent the evening touring the towns and shaking up in a motel.

http://www.eskimo.com/~johnsen/car/N..._riverboat.jpg

Wednesday May 10, 2017

Next day I took a wrong turn at Asotin and rather than turning up the hill (fantastic corners), I followed the Snake River Road along the waterline for about 15 miles until the pavement ended.

http://www.eskimo.com/~johnsen/car/N.../snek_rvr1.jpg

It's very skeenik and portagraphikal.

http://www.eskimo.com/~johnsen/car/N.../snek_rvr2.jpg

Once I got onto the right road, the uphill canyon was fun and I neglected to take pictures. Running late...

Once at the top, the road follows along a mesa top through Anatone to the top of Rattlesnake Canyon where Fields Spring State Park is.
This is near the top of the canyon. Lots of turns, but short vistas due to tree cover.

http://www.eskimo.com/~johnsen/car/N...ek/up_rtl1.jpg

Stopped where the view opens up near the middle for a couple shots.

http://www.eskimo.com/~johnsen/car/N...ek/dn_rtl1.jpg

The last corner at the bottom is Rattlesnake Creek. There was a wash through there last winter that messed things up and scoured out the creekbed and parts of the roadbed on the right side.

http://www.eskimo.com/~johnsen/car/N...ek/dn_rtl2.jpg

This is one of the portions of the road near the bottom that was washed half away.

http://www.eskimo.com/~johnsen/car/N...ek/lo_rtl1.jpg

Here's the view back up rtlsnek cr. from the Grand Ronde River at the bottom.

http://www.eskimo.com/~johnsen/car/N...k/boggans1.jpg

Stop off here for Boggan's Oasis and a thick handmade milkshake. Couple dozen flavors available. I got Black Raspberry.

The road goes back up the other side through Buford Canyon that has some quite amazing switchbacks carved into the hill.

Slightly farther up I stopped for some car shots. Down the canyon.

And up the side of the hill above.

Once at the top I'm traveling along another mesa. It folows Joseph Creek Canyon (Chief Joseph - Nez Perce) past the Rimrock Inn.
I didn't stop. There's a public viewpoint a bit farther along with huge views and a pit toilet if needed.

They've got a couple of small history displays too.

The road turns into OR3 at the border and eventually drops gradually into the Enterprise basin with mountains all around.

On the way back northwest toward La Grande the road cuts through the mountains at Minim which is another fantastic canyon run.

West of Pendleton, there was a grass fire burning off to the north. I could see the flame front advancing with orange flames, but the photo doesn't do it justice.

OR Hwy84 is smooth as glass in the eastern part of the state, though the part from the Dalles to Portland is hammered and lumpy as a very hammered lumpy thing.
I turned off on 97 and took that north to Yakima, then WA12 over White Pass.
Picked up I5 and headed home.
About 10 hours straight driving with a few stops to poke around various and sundry.
That was a long day.

(copied from the landmarks thread)

Took a drive today out to Aberdeen (WA) and down 101 on the coast through Westport, Grayland and Raymond.

That was nice. Turned around and came back the same way. I don't often go down that part of the coast.
Usually miss out that part by taking an inland route and avoid it. Recommended.

Stopped off in Tokeland for a landmark.

Went for a drive to test out the new Domo kite I got at Ocean Shores last week.
The weather turned out drippy on the Sunday, so I hit up the kite shop.

Took a drive up to Port Gamble, Wa. and the timber processing yard they used to have down there.

Couple pit shots from the historic races at Pacific Raceway yesterday before 86 Sessions.

So much nostalgia

You probably need an 86 Experience

Rather than sit inside on a nice day knitting bones, I took off for Ocean Shores to tag the shark for the landmarks thread.

Then I went up 101 a bit to Donkey Crk Rd / NF-22.
It goes from a bit north of Humptulips east to Wynoochee Lake.
The Donkey part was well paved two lane, but NF-22 is single lane and mostly gravel.
Was fun. There were log trucks involved.
