Forged Engine & Stage 4 AVO Turbo

2 Attachment(s)
Bought a used GT86 last week (2 years old with 7K miles on it) and I'm planning to do quite a few modifications to it. Now I've never really modified a car before... so this is going to be a bit of a learning experience and I'll probably get plenty of things wrong and ask some stupid questions along the way. But hey, all part of the fun.

Anyway I figured I'd start a thread here and post some pictures of it stock to begin with:

Original plans are as follows, but this might change along the way:

Stage 3 AVO turbo kit
AVO 3 inch exhaust
Oil cooler and uprated fuel pump and injectors
KW V3 coilovers
Strut brace
Uprated clutch
DBA discs all round

Oh and getting it wrapped, possibly matte blue but haven't decided yet.

Updates coming soon :)

UPDATE (November 2016): Here's what it looks like now its been resprayed in Stealth Grey and had a lot of other mods done as well:

and here's a montage of everything we've done to the car over the last 2 years :

Another UK guy on here I see. This really is a great forum, probably due to the fact the FRS is so affordable in the USA compared to our rip off Britain prices..meaning they're more popular among tuners.

Which region of the UK are you in Chris?

ChrisD 01-24-2015 09:36 AM

Ha, funny enough I was just reading your thread thinking the exact same thing. I'm in Lincolnshire, how about you?

Plans at the moment are to do the following mods but of course this might change:

Stage 3 AVO turbo kit (or mayyyybe stage 4)
Oil cooler and fuel pump etc
KW V3 coilovers
Strut brace
Anti roll bars
Uprated clutch
Uprated drive shafts
Alloy prop shaft
Forged con rods and possibly forged pistons
StopTech 4 piston brake calipers and discs for the front
Hydraulic hand brake

Oh and getting it wrapped, possibly matte blue but haven't decided yet.

Why are you choosing the AVO kit over other turbo kits? The general consensus on this forum seems to be that there are better turbo kits out there in terms of cost-per-HP and available overhead. My impression is that the AVO kit is ideal for the 250-280hp range. If you want 400hp like what a stg4 AVO kit would give you, I'd suggest just getting a Fullblown kit from the start.

Be sure to spend lots of time in the Owners Threads. That's how I decided on my FI lol

Mainly because they seem to be one of the most commonly used and commonly recommended turbo setups for this car (in this country anyway). I've seen very few problem reports and lots of happy customers. Fensport use the AVO stage 3 turbo in their 420 bhp GT86 race car, and I've seen plenty of people with the stage 3 AVO turbo getting well over 300 bhp out of that alone, so I don't really know why you say they are only ideal for 250-280 bhp. I don't really care if I could get slightly better value in terms of cost per bhp to be honest - I'd rather have something that more people are using and is therefore more "tried and tested"

Availability of parts in the UK is limited really, so with a turbo kit I'd be going with what I know and what is tried and tested over here, which I can only imagine is what Chris is doing.

Saying that I am importing a lot of my parts, everyone on the UK forums is pretty bland with regard to their tuning with a few exceptions.

Yeah exactly.

Oh and yeah seems kind of rare to see any major modifications on them here doesn't it. I remember on a UK forum I saw one guy that had just got a GT86 saying how he was going to "do it properly because everyone else is just treating their GT86 like a garage queen and not doing any serious modifications or drifting it etc" ... then all he did was lowered it and put some different wheels on :/

Sounds about right haha. I'm not doing a major build to be fair, been there before with previous cars. Just want the basics, suspension, exhaust and a map, all done with fancy bits from Japan.

Looking forward to seeing your progress with this!

First parts arrived the other day so got to work fitting them (with the help of a friend who actually knows what he's doing unlike me). So yeah, the following parts are now installed and here's a few terrible pics:

SUMIT front strut brace
DBA T3 discs (front only)
Hawk HPS pads (front only)

Oh and the KW V3 coilys arrived so will be installing them at the weekend

With the help of some friends we got the KW V3s installed over the weekend - took a lot longer than expected as we didn't have the right tool to get the top mount off the stock suspension... but we got there in the end. Need to adjust the rear as it seems to be a bit lower than the front now, and might have to look at some adjustable rear control arms to get rid of the camber on the back but here's a picture of what it looked like straight after we'd installed them:

Next job is to install the Whiteline rear bushing inserts to hopefully get rid of some of that slack in the drivetrain. Then after that it's off to get wrapped in matte/satin blue, then once that's done it will be time for a turbo and exhaust to be installed (not something me and my friends can do unfortunately).

Forgot to update this thread, but yeah we got the whiteline rear subframe bush inserts installed and they've definitely helped with the slop/jerkyness when getting on and off the gas. Still a few things we need to sort out with the suspension, but here's what it looks like with the wrap:

Pictures don't really do the matte/satin finish or the colour justice, but hey.

But anyway, right now the car is at Fensport getting the AVO stage 3 turbo installed along with a full AVO 3 inch exhaust system, uprated clutch, oil cooler, boost controller, P3Cars gauge, and a few other little bits.

Ordered some new slightly wider wheels with a lower offset (OZ Racing Ultraleggera, 17x7.5, et 35) so that they aren't so sunken in behind the body work. Hopefully should be here in a week. Valenti rear lights should be here soon too :)
