Autocross

Searching through Mid Atlantic posts, it seems that most of you in the DC/VA/MD area that autocross do so through the Capital Driving Club (CDC). Does that seem right? Any other DC area autocross that is especially popular here?

I used to go through BMW's Car Club of America's (BMW CCA) National Capital Chapter in my e36 and e46 and would see a couple of FRS/BRZs but not many.

CDC is great for entry level drivers new to autocross, light index system with no classing. They have many skilled drivers there too so there is a challenge for the seasoned and skilled as well. CDC encourages ride-alongs, has cookouts, and is generally a fun and relaxing day.

WDCR chapter of SCCA is the harder-core autocross in the area, following SCCA rules. They run at FedEx field about 7 times a year. Well a beginner could certainly go and have fun, having some experience and an understanding of the SCCA classing system is fairly important. This is fiercely competitive in some classes and you will witness some truly phenomenal drivers in our region.

Autocrossers Inc is sort of SCCA-lite and is run by many of the same people who are on the local SCCA committee. It is less serious than an SCCA event, but is still based on SCCA classing. AI events are something between CDC and SCCA on the serious and rules scale, but the talent at the events is typically quite good. They run only in Waldorf, which is a fantastic lot and only do a few events a year.

What he said ^^

I started autocrossing with CDC last year and it's been an amazing experience (and I've never done any racing of any sort) great place to start if you're brand new

I started autocrossing with the SCCA at Fedex Field. A guy I met there from the forums told me to come to a CDC event. Definitely seems like most of us attend CDC events. There are a lot of twins at there. Probably more FR-S's and BRZ's than any other car except maybe Miatas.

Anyways the folks at CDC are really welcoming and their events cost significantly less than SCCA events.

I'll probably head out to a CDC event sometime after the end of Feb... =D

I've gone to all 3 (SCCA, CDC, AI) many times and I feel like I get the most value out of going to the SCCA events because the people there have been doing it for so long. I enjoy going to all of them though.

The main thing is to just get out there and get seat time no matter where it is. Drive the car the way it was meant to be :burnrubber:

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'll definitely come check out a CDC event. I don't go often enough yet for points (or class) to matter to me.

The 2015 CDC autocross schedule is now posted

If you are a little further south, the Virginia Motor Sport Club (VMSC) runs one event per month in the Richmond area. The first event is March 22 at Virgina Motorsport Park, just off of I-85 just sourht of Petersburg. Most of our events are at RIR. The full schedule will be posted in a few weeks on www.vmsc.org.

I run with SCCA, AI, and NCC BMW club since they run only at the best sites (Waldorf and FedEx). If there's an extra weekend or two, I'll run with Susquehanna in PA or CDC.

I like BMW club the best because I can be home easily by 1pm after 4+ runs, they're the cheapest, and they run at FedEx now.

I also run with the WDCR & AI SCCA regions. I only run with CDC when they are at Waldorf. Since I don't attend them all, they are like practice events for me. I am thinking about running with NCC this year as well though!
