CAI causing check engine light
So I got tired of hearing the bird cherping under my hood and took my 2014 FRS to my local dealership and had them change out the fuel pump. Now, a week after buying the car this past July I installed a Grady CAI. I've never had one issue with with the with the part with the Parton withthepartorthe withthepartorthe CAI withthepartorthecarother than the cherping, once they finished with the ch fuel pump iinssu left and got and bout 3 miles away andboutwaymd my check engine light comes on.
When iinssu brought iinssu back back to back to them it took 4 days for them to problem shoot why the car just started running lean, they claimed they called a master tech hotline they use and we're informed the CAI is causing causing the code. They reinstalled a stock airbox and reset the ECU and the code went away until today(just got the car back to them it yesterday). Has anyone else had this issue with any other CAIs? Is there anyway to "trick" the ECU into running the air fuel ratio at stock levels or whatever level is needed for for the increased air flow, without dropping $700 for an ECUtek? Or taking it to have it tuned for just a CAI? |

Did you have a mild stroke while typing this?

First of all the Greddy intake you installed is called a Short Ram Intake. It is not a CAI (cold air intake), since the filter is located inside an airbox in the engine bay. Cold air intakes have the filter located outside of the engine bay where they are exposed to, you guessed it, cold air. Second, it is common practice and likely included in the instructions for that intake that you should disconnect the battery, wait 10 minutes, and reconnect the battery when installing an intake to reset the ECU and rebuild your fuel trims for a correct AFR after driving the car for a while. This is likely the case assuming your intake was installed correctly, and there are no vacuum leaks. Third, if the reason you installed that intake was to increase horsepower you should know that it will have very little effect without a tune. You can expect the same small, barely noticeable increase in power from a drop-in filter in the stock intake. There are a few true cold air intakes out there like Perrin and Mishimoto that will consistently lower intake air temps and yield power gains without tuning or causing lean AFR and throwing the check engine light. There are also a few short ram intakes featuring quality designs that will do the same thing like Grimmspeed and AEM. My recommendation is to sell your Greddy intake and buy a drop-in filter for the stock intake and stop modifying the engine until you do some more research on how modifications affect the way the engine performs. If you want a tune, read this thread first and decide on which tuning platform you want: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29340 Though EcuTek is by far the most robust tuning platform for the 86, there are several options that may fit your budget and goals should you decide to tune your car. |
Well then
Well I can't say I don't deserve the hate, I'm using my phone to post, as I'm not able to post access a computer right now. But thanks anyways for the advice.

Edit: misread op's response

Yeah, ok. Trolls, jackasses, what have you, it's what ever. Between autocorrect and overly large thumbs, I know I can't type for shit on my phone. Couple that with sitting at the dealership talking to idiots I'm amazed I didn't just throw my phone. I'll learn how to use your oh so amazing forums and if I post again I'll be sure to have you proof read it for me so you wittle head won't hurt again.

Next time when you need something, here is my suggestion.
1. www.google.com 2. Type: frs (your concerned keywords) Here is what i typed. frs intake check engine light 3. Result: https://www.google.com/search?site=&...k+engine+light Saves you TON of time typing those paragraphs. |

I can understand a word or two misspelled because of autocorrect, but the third sentence of your OP is barely understandable. I can't imagine you went back and read it and went, "welp, looks good!" I'd just be embarassed for myself if I posted what you did, but I guess getting defensive/hostile about it is cool too. :iono: |

If the CAI/intake or whatever ran for 3 weeks without generating a cel code then its probably not the cai/intake that's the root cause of the issue. If you have a problem resetting the ecu just clears cel code won't fix problem. Ecu constantly "learns" fuel trims, not just after reset. Read links below. My guess would be service guys have done something like not plugged maf sensor plug in all the way, dislodged 02 sensor cables or they may have pulled off cai/intake/maf sensor and you have an air leak. check all plugs connections and for intake air leaks especially the gasket at maf sensor. what code is it ?? alternatively put stock intake back on, if code still there, take back to dealer and they will fix it, they will always try to blame aftermarket parts unfortunately. |
 this post made my day
