My car is turbocharged, trans still works perfectly, 22k on the car.

Hey guys, I'm seriously contemplating on going into a local Subaru dealership/ service shop and have my transmission replaced under warranty (I'm close to 27k miles already from the one and a half year of ownership lol).
Quick question though, I presume I should probably remove my aftermarket header and re-install the stock header, for any chance of the dealership voiding my warranty claim. But my question is whether or not, I should uninstall my KartBoy Short Shifter, KartBoy Transmission Mount, and MTEC Short Springs (which I somewhat believe contributes to why the transmission grinds when shifting at higher RPMs). Would the dealership notice the difference and try to void the claim? For those who have went into a dealership and had their transmission placed under warranty, could you describe to me how everything/ the process went? Thanks! |
Mine is a little crunchy going into second when cold.
At 4500 miles now but has been the same since new. no fluid change, all stock bushings and shifter. I wasn't planning on taking it to the dealer unless it gets worse. Sounds like it's just how these transmissions are. This is my 7th vehicle with a manual transmission. Second gear in the BRZ reminds me a little of my 1986 Honda CRX SI. Too bad that had 250k miles on the stock synchros when it felt that way. |
My car is not a daily driver and will not see outside temps colder than 0 degrees celicus or 30 farinheit. Stock fluid and I have 1200 km's on the car. I always let the engine warm up before I take off. 1-2 grinds SOMETIMES. As soon as transmission warms up, it shifts perfectly. I am not concerned. After much reading, seems this is normal from 2012-2015 models....

The thing is most people bought this car as a daily driver, but unlike other manual cars, this car naturally shifts 'crunchier'. This makes them believe there is something wrong with their transmission because their previous cars never felt this way, especially being an experienced driver after so-and-so years. If you don't like the shift feel, this car is not for you. It's also important to note that this car is designed with triple-cone synchros on 1st/2nd/3rd gears versus dual-cone synchros like in many others. This means the crunch-like feel will be more significant. However, the benefit is that it improves overall synchro durability while driving at high RPM. Remember folks, this was designed to be a sports car after all, not your typical grocery getter. |

A few tips for people:
- drive/shift gently & rev match until transmission oil temp warms up. - use better/lighter gear oil during the cold winter months. - never forcibly shift into gear. |
2nd is notchy, no 4th gear grind though. Much better when warm, but 2nd has refused to shift on a couple of occasions of quick shifts. Most likely because it wasn't to full op temp yet. at 8k miles it refused to shift into 2nd at high rpm shift, and wanted to grind. I finally got it to go into 2nd, but it felt notchy and would crunch a bit for a few hundred more miles. Now it feels pretty good.

Shifts great
I live in NW Indiana, so plenty of cold. Granted I don't drive it during the worst of the winter but she still sees some cold weather driving. I think the tranny shifts just great. Of course my last car was a 2012 Genesis Coupe and that tranny left something to be desired. Oh yeah, the car has almost 33,000 miles so it has been driven a lot.

I use to have a 2nd gear clunk. And a 4th gear grind after about 10,000km on motul gear 300 it has cured 95% of my problems. The last 5 % is because I hear this weird rattle noise on cold start when warming up after warm it has zero noise.

Do have grinding noise at around 3000RPM either on gear or neutral, when car has 10000 Miles transmission lock up inside and stuck on 3rd gear. Replaced transmission with one from a car that had only 3000miles. For the first 3 moths everything was fine then the same problem showed up like the other transmission( grinding noise, hard to shift on 2nd 3rd and reverse) now after 9000 miles on this transmission got locked up inside and stuck on 3rd gear. Is this an oil problem or is TOYOTA bad design. There is no recall for Manual transmission at all.

My box still shifts great. Truth be told, this tranny does feel cheap and flimsy compared to others.
