"le-mons" race

Has anyone been wanting to do one of these? I have always wanted to strip a car down and go ham for a whole day(no risk). Is anyone down to "go in" on a car with me? I believe we need at least three drivers.

Decay107 01-07-2015 05:51 PM

Yes, I've been wanting to do this for quite a while. It would be awesome to get a whole team of 86 owners in on this.

I think Chump Car runs races closer to Portland though.

I've always wanted to do this but don't have the garage needed to undertake the project. part of me still wants to build a hornet racer.

this sounds so fun

I am a member of a local lemons team. We race a 240 here at CMP as well as Barber Motorsports Park down in Birmingham. Lemons is a great way to enjoy grassroots racing and get track time for a rather affordable amount. You also will get more hands on experience building, prepping, and maintaining the car than you would with a normal track car.

Just understand, you really need a dedicated and I mean dedicated team to build the car and race. Expect the actual cost of building the car to approach $2000 or more in reality. The $500 car is really a myth as safety equipment alone will push you over.

In regards to Chump vs Lemons. Lemons used to be the party parade type, but it is definitely becoming more and more race focused but still more relaxing and laid back than Chump. A lot of the teams run both depending upon proximity to the track location.

If you any questions feel free to let me know.

Doug and I discussed this a bit up at FD last year... but until I finish the house I just can't take on another project. The house is getting closer to completion, though...

I guess the real question is who's in and has a garage? I'm in from a time commitment and monetary perspective, but lack the garage space.

Haha, there will be garage space late Summer when I wrap up the house, but that means we couldn't compete until the 2016 season.

We could do ice racing up in Canada

Depending on the monetary portion, I may be able to do this. If we are working a six man team this should be pretty inexpensive given the car and the availability of very economical parts. Unfortunately, I too don't have the garage space any longer.

Me too. I haven't had the chance to own one yet, but I'd love to have a go in one of the four wheel steering models!

stockysnail 01-18-2015 01:26 PM

Might be interested depending on the cost.

If we get 5 or 6 people in, I'll bet we could do it for $500 per person, plus consumables.

Chiming in here:

If you're looking to dip your toe in the water, get involved with a Lemons or Chump forum - sometimes teams are looking for an extra driver or two willing to split costs. A couple friends and I did a 10 hour race at The Ridge Motorsports Park a couple summer's ago.

I paid $460 or so (plus a bit more to buy some required safety gear - my friend managed to borrow all his stuff). For one of the greatest days of hooligan tomfoolery in recent memory. We raced the shittiest '76 Chevette in existence against almost 60 other cars on one of the great new tracks in the PNW. We laughed, we cried, we blew head gaskets, we helped the team next to use re-time their AW11 MR2, we raced at night with barely functioning headlights on an unlit track.

IT. WAS. AWESOME.

That was pretty much my plan if nothing materializes here in the next year or so. :D

I just think it would be awesome to get a whole team of 86 owners out there!

Decay107 02-06-2015 03:59 PM

Bump!

We could race a Mustang :confused0068:

A 4 cylinder 86HP (lol) mustang that is...

Or how about a 5L V8 that puts out an mind blowing 205HP?

Chen 02-06-2015 05:13 PM

Pass on the stang.

Decay107 02-06-2015 05:38 PM

But it's a Mustang, so it's got to be at least as fast as an FR-S... right?

Lunatic 02-06-2015 07:05 PM

You don't need a car. Talk to Bill at Oregon Raceway Park. He has 5 or 6 chump cars and is always looking for drivers. 541-333-2452
Also I think Wryann at VIP Performance in Portland has one, give him a call. 503-257-1110
