Awesome!

Did you post this in the Southeast regional subforum? If any region can pull it off outside of CA you guys should be able to (and maybe Texas too)...it seems that there are an ass-ton of twins in Florida

raul 01-07-2015 02:37 PM

@Lonewolf yes I did, and in various FB groups. And while I thought the same thing about the amount of twins in FL, a large portion of them just seem interested in the community aspect more than the sport.

The community is what keeps everything going

Ironically, the track 86 community, for the most part, shuns meets.... lol

raul 01-07-2015 03:25 PM

Haha, exactly! I haven't been showing up at meets forever and honestly don't like to show up at the ones I know are filled with people that like to make noise.

philooo 01-07-2015 03:28 PM

I am in miami and I am definitely interested.
I think I may be able to bring 2 other cars, race ready car.

what kind of specs would be talking about ?

MyRx 01-07-2015 04:26 PM

Don't stray too far from the intent of this thread/post. And certainly you can turn some of the community into track-goers even if it's for a free ride, support/camaraderie, or just showing them how mods do perform. Don't discourage anybody but rather invite everyone. It'll filter on it's own :)

Its an intimidating proposition for most people, even car nuts who have never experienced a HPDE. Concerns range from wrecking or breaking the car to being embarrassed while learning to drive on a race track. If people only knew how much fun they would have and how great the social scene actually is, then I think many more would give it a try.

It may be hard to find enough solo level drivers to field the events without possibly starting with a couple instructed events to build the bench.

We have a few instructors already interested and we're exploring having an academy portion to it. As far as safety goes, we do plan to keep passing rules to point-bys only since we'll have plenty of time to get laps without traffic due to the low number of participants, but we do need at least 15 to break even on track fees. The first few events will be the most difficult to put together, but then as we build some funds to purchase the timing equipment rather than renting it, and possibly score deals with sponsors and other tracks, we hope to grow it into something more resembling a driver development and competition series combined. And concerning embarrassment at the track, I don't buy it. I've never seen an instance of shaming at the track because someone was too slow. Usually others do their best to help them be faster/safer.

You mean the Hitting the Streets parking lot aspect.

Trust me, I know. I've gotten some of the folks over at the car meets to come to the track and they ALL love it. Or at least they say they do, but then they go back to posting on Facebook about how their cheap turbo kit caused issues.

... and then they want to buy an S2k? The reality is that track weekends aren't cheap, but most people will know after that first day whether this is something they are going to do as often as they can afford or if it just isn't for them. The learning curve and the quality of the instructor/classroom instruction can have a great effect on which way they go.

Right. I probably have about $4k in track fees and $6k in consumables and travel over the past 2 years, but I don't have a heavily modded car. I've come pretty damn far I have to say, and I wouldn't have done it any other way.

raul 01-08-2015 12:57 PM

So, is anyone interested? We're looking at 5 dates this year if we get the interest. I understand that it's not as appealing to do it at other major tracks, but it's either this, or piggybacking on NASA's dates and fees.

I like the location, since I'm close. I can't commit to 5 but I would at least do one :).

Used to live in Central Florida but back up in MD now. I have some buddies in Jax and also Gainesville. I'd consider coming down for a long weekend for an event to try it out. I am a very active autocrosser but have not done any track-time yet. The FIRM is supposed to be pretty sweet. Would/could this be a bring a friend thing if they have a different model vehicle?

Would love updates!

Dave-ROR 01-12-2015 05:07 PM

We can see how many FRS/BRZ can beat a 150WHP FWD Economy car.

Ryaquinn 01-12-2015 05:22 PM

I'm in for this.

I've never done a track day before but I've always been interested... I'm not into Autocross, but always liked the idea of a real track.

I'm definitely curious enough to say that I would do 1 event.

A 150WHP FWD Economy car, or a 150WHP FWD Economy car that is gutted and prepped for the racetrack? :D

raul 01-13-2015 11:10 AM

It seems like we haven't met the minimum commitment level for using FIRM, so what we plan to do is to go with NASA if everything works out. Since they have some of the best contingencies available. We'll have our own scoring/timing sheet alongside their normal NASA classes, so technically we'll be running in 2 classes and if we make it big enough, could win double trophies. Sebring, RRR and Daytona to start, and next year hopefully add VIR, RA and CMP. This year we'll dedicate to building a roster and getting everyone some instruction if necessary to get their TT licenses (only $10 with NASA). I can't think of a different way to do this that won't end up in a significant cash injection from the organizers. @CSG Mike, is CSG on board to provide 86CUP pricing to our competitors in the east coast? I'd be willing to step up in driver's meetings for the plug. ;)
