dp1 track build (NY)
Base Car
- 2014 Scion FR-S Monogram MT Firestorm, June 2014 - present, primarily track use in North East May-Nov. Shops and Tuners - Trusted advisers and parts suppliers: Mike @CSG Mike and David @CSG David from Counter Space Garage (CSG). Wouldn't have gone this far without their support. - Mechanical: EFI Logics. Top notch shop in North East that I use regularly. Tons of experience servicing and driving track cars. - Tuner: @DeliciousTuning (DeliciousTuning.com), FlexFuel Flash and Go (FNG) tune. Car feels great on track, AFR looks good through the rpm range. - Engine Builder: Outfront Motorsports. Thanks to @DeliciousTuning for mentioning their work. Most impressed by (1) Good reputation, (2) Jeremy's openness and honesty about what they do, quality parts and labor, and (3) Confirmation from @CSG Mike who stopped by Outfront Motorsports in person to talk to Jeremy and agree on the final design. - Sincere thanks to Mike @moto-mike at Moto-East for helping me sort out the car in 2014 after many problems with PrimeMotoring/Prime Motoring (mechanical) and JrTuned/Jr Tuned (tune). I would have never done business with them if a post like this had been available. Mike runs a great shop, is a master Ecutek tuner, owns and tracks a twin. Consider the following when looking for a shop to build and maintain a track car: - Few if any bad online reviews (even Yelp), and how any bad reviews are handled, - Racers and instructors recommend the shop in person (at the racetrack) and online, - Shop is owned and/or ran by racers who can be seen at race tracks, - Other track cars can be seen serviced at the shop (Facebook, other online sources, visit in person), - Shop is focused on track performance builds and not drag strip builds (very different design goals) or stance, bagging, - Respectable age and experience of people running the shop and working on your car, - Good experience when dealing with issues, small or big, on-line and in person, - Good experience working on cars like yours, - Valuable contributions to the online community, etc. ...choose wisely, your life may depend on it. Engine Build Design goals: Reliable whp @ OEM 12.5 compression @ 93/100 gas with Jackson Racing C38 SC and HBP. Engine should survive a "money shift". Donor: 2015 engine with <3k miles. - Custom CP Carrillo FA20 Pistons for BRZ/FRS 12.5:1 CR 86.5mm. - Piston Ceramic Crown And Moly Skirt Coating. - Carrillo Subaru/Toyota FA20 Pro-H 3/8 CARR Bolt Connecting Rods. - King Performance FA20 Main and Rod Bearings. - Ferrea complete set valve springs/spring retainers/spring seat locators/valves (+1mm exhaust)/springs. - Subaru FA20 BRZ Left Intake + Exhaust and Right Intake + Exhaust Cam Gears. - Fluidampr Subaru BRZ/Scion FR-S/Toyota 86 FA20/4U-GSE 2014+ Steel Internally Balanced Damper. - Outfront Motorsports 1/2" Head Stud Kit. - WPC Treatment for Bearings, H4 Crankshaft, Connecting Rod, Wrist Pin, Thrust Bearing, 4 Cyl Camshaft Set, Rocker, Valves, Valve Spring Retainers, Valve Springs, Rocker Arm Pivot, Oil Pump Gears. - Motul Break-in Oil 10w40 for 50mi, then Valvoline 779309 SAE 10W-40 Premium Conventional Motor Oil @ 50mi, 100mi, 500mi, 1000mi, 2000mi, 3000mi, then Synthetic 10w40. I also have the JRSC kit with the factory tune. Do you feel like you need both the JR oil cooler and Koyo rad to keep temperatures down at the track? My impression was that most people were content with only the oil cooler. |
Quote:
I'm the one...unlucky to catch it but lucky to walk away from it :) You need an oil cooler for track but you don't need Koyo rad...I just wanted extra insurance but it's not necessary. |
I would say to change out your fluids. OEM fluids just suck big time. :)
Great build though! What kind of Oil Temps/Pressures are you seeing on track with the JR Oil Cooler? -Mike Paisan http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/153798190.jpg Maintaining, Modifying and Educating TriState Enthusiasts since 2001. Hi Mike, thanks and I agree re fluids, will get them replaced in the spring. Got free (OEM) oil change and tranny fluid when they replaced the tranny under warranty.
Don't have an oil pressure gauge. Oil temps on a very hot and humid track day were in mid 240s iirc. See that you had fun in Miami, way to go  Quote:

Track timing evolution: Started with Harry's Lap Timer and built-in iPhone GPS (1Hz - up to 1 sec delay, way too slow to capture fast transitions), then moved up to the external bluetooth GPS Dual 150A (5Hz - up to 0.2 sec delay, much better), and now VBOX Sport (20Hz - up to 0.05 sec delay, pretty much perfect) is on it's way...little pricey but it's a long-term investment.
|
Go-karting: Great way to fill the winter track/ax void. Took a 1hr 1-on-1 instruction today at GPNY to get into 9hp instead of standard 6hp karts...wow, what a difference.
|
What made you chose VBOX over AIM Solo?
Hope to see you again at an event this year. |
Quote:
Would be great to see you at an event VBOX because I wanted portability and a better GPS, since I review video (GoPro attached to the middle/inside rear window) of my track/ax runs with data overlays. I already use and like Harry's Lap Timer (iPhone) and MX WiFi obd2 adapter. |
Quote:
Also, Ohlins was on my short list of coilovers for this year, but I think I am leaning towards RCE Tarmac 2 (re-valved/sprung KW V3) instead. Will be pared with RaceSeng Cas/Cam and read 1" mounts, rear LCA and toe arms. Thoughts? Not my daily driver but does see some weekend/winter fun driving. One last question - Does your P3 work at the same time as your OBDII BT dongle? |
My 2014 FR-S monogram firestorm (JRSC with street/AX/track setup)
Quote:
That's right, I just wanted a faster and portable GPS, happy with everything else. Not familiar with dampers other than stock, Ohlins and Bilstein B16. I changed springs on Ohlins and had them revalved, to allow a little more rotation, more at low than high speed. You do want camber in front and rear, at least -2.0 and little more negative in front, so you're looking at the right parts. Also consider adjustable endlinks. P3 doesn't work at the same time as MX, as both use obd2. |
After two years and two done up twins, I've been thinking about alternatives i.e. Cobra GT350 or track prepped C5/C6 (never owned American muscle and already owned Boxster and Elise). However, 3 days at Palmer Motorsports Park with NASA last weekend confirmed that my car is now set up so well for my HPDE and AX needs that I'd be foolish to let it go...decided to keep it for at least another year and a new Scion iA (AT) is taking over the daily commute.
|
Next step - reaching out to Element Tuning to chat about oil pressure and other things to make the car more reliable long term. Everything on the car worked great for daily street driving and 21 HPDE/AX days this year.
|
Thanks for your help @CSG Mike and @Jackson Racing, looking forward to the new c38 supercharger kit :). It'll be a fun track season, 13 HPDE days booked, 3 more lined up and more to come...

Added fluid info, with help from @CSG Mike:
Engine oil, with Jackson Racing oil cooler Type: Motul 300V 5w30 Amount: 5.5 liters (almost the same in quarts) Interval: Varies widely based on conditions and driver, cheap insurance to use HQ fluid and change more often than recommended by manufacturer. Transmission fluid Type: Motul Gear 300 Amount: 2.2 liters full flush Interval: Consider once every 6 track days, or any time you feel there is degredation in the shifter. If shifter feels better immediately after fluid change, shorten your interval by a track day. If it doesn't improve in feel, lengthen by a track day until you find your happy medium. Brake fluid Type: Torque RT700 Amount: 1 liter full flush, 0.5 liter partial flush Interval: Brake fluid is "as needed" or once a year. If your pedal feel degrades, partial 0.5l flush. Full 1l flush when changing fluid types. Differential fluid Type: OS Giken OS-250R 80W-250 Amount: 1.3 liters full flush Interval: Every 6-12 track days, depending on how hard you drive. If the rear starts feeling looser, or differential is overheated, change fluid. Jackson racing SC fluid Type: Rotrex fluid Amount: 1 liter for complete fill when kit is first installed. Fluid changes will require less as fluid in radiator does not flush out without rad removal. Interval: At least once every 2y/50k mi. |

I'm not a mechanic and I never changed tranny fluid because of degraded performance but I noticed smoother gear engagement when I first switched to Motul Gear 300. I borrowed the words from @CSG Mike so hopefully he will chime in with more specifics. Gear changes vary in feel (resistance) for specific gears and things move under extreme breaking forces (BBK and chirping slicks). The more you practice (shifting smoother then faster then heel-and-toe), the more you will notice differences. Fresh fluids are cheap insurance and I change mine often. |
Quote:
Now, over time, the feel will degrade, but because it's gradual, you won't notice it. The next time you change the fluid, you'll notice if "feels better" again, even though you used the same fluid! This is an indicator that the fluid you took out, was degraded. Eventually, with experience, you'll learn to recognize the signs of aged fluid. |
Quote:
I changed the fluid out at around 1000 miles (6k now) and I did notice an immediate improvement in smoothness with Motul 300. It felt more "cushioned" and went from gear to gear like a light switch. But in the past couple months when I shift from 1-2 and 2-3 I get clanking / clunking. I haven't tracked, just one 86 DDA day with Moto, so I guess I picked up some bad shifting habits. |

Picked up the car at EFI Logics, once again great work :happyanim:
C38 is responsive, drives very similar to C30. The tune by @DeliciousTuning works great. I can see a lot of heat coming up when the car is still or barely moving, will test everything on track in a few weeks. Great recommendations by CSG. |

Good times with good people at NASANE HPDE track event May 14-15 at Pocono Raceway, SE course option 3. Weather ranged from 41F - 73F and rain, tiny hail, no wind, lots of wind, sunny and a snow squall (after I had left on day 2). Both sets of tires (Nitto NT01 and Michelin PSS) got a nice workout.
https://youtu.be/nCkTiP-doKg (point-bys and passing that shows other cars), and https://youtu.be/ltue9rLqShY (two clean laps, one with nitto nt01 in warmer temps - includes commentary - and other with michelin pss in cooler temps) |

Very nice.
In another thread you mentioned youre moving forward with aero ... Whats the plan? |

Thanks. May have been the comment about Invidia q300 muffler shape being aero-friendly - otherwise no aero plans for me - the stock setup with OEM wing on monogram works perfectly fine for me. |
What a day - at NJMP Lightning with PCA RTR since Friday. Started on racer take offs Toyo Proxes RR slicks mounted at Thunderbolt last weekend. Discovered this morning before the first session that one tire started to splice and would have corded in a session or two. Went to town, no performance tires available. Drove 55min to TireRack in Delaware to pick up new 255/40-17 Toyo Proxes RA1 for my 17x9 RPF1. Had them mounted and balanced at nearby Chevy dealership. Got back to track well before the first afternoon session. Drive back from Delaware and first 3 laps scrubbed the manufacturing "grease", then off to beating my best time ever by precisely (to 1/100) one second. Not bad. Tomorrow is day 3, let's see how things go :)

Bought a spare used 2014 engine that's going to Phil @Element Tuning for rebuild by year end, then install by EFI Logics before the 2017 track season. Depending on how the new build works on track, my current engine may also go for rebuild in mid-late 2017.

UPDATE: Selected Outfront Motorsports in Cali to build the 2015 motor I just bought. |
Looking for a used engine again. Seller asked if I wouldn't mind to give it up for his friend who just blew his engine and off it goes for a good cause. I don't have any issues with my engine so no rush. Evaluating two builders now with help from my guardian angel.

Also, selected Outfront Motorsports to build the 2015 engine to specs reviewed by @CSG Mike...this will be good, very good. |
Fun with P-cars June 24-26 at the NJMP Lightning racetrack. Testing new JRZ double adjustable dampers, also spliced my racer take-offs Toyo Proxes RR slicks by the end of day 1, noticed first thing in the am on day 2 so had to spend the morning on 6/25 driving to a TireRack warehouse in Delaware to get new 255/40-17 Toyo Proxes.
