Need help removing exhaust for painting?
I'm just about to paint my exhaust tips with the VHT paint I bought. Someone on this forums suggested removing it for painting, instead of masking off the surrounding area.
However, I've got the Fujistsubo exhaust which doesn't have the removable tips like the stock exhaust system. The tips are wielded on. http://i1189.photobucket.com/albums/...ps97b5b490.jpg Would I be able to remove just the 2 nuts to get the whole piece off? http://i1189.photobucket.com/albums/...ps59c2c736.jpg http://i1189.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0d322ca7.jpg There's also a black rubber looking piece holding in place, which I'm guessing I'll have to remove too? http://i1189.photobucket.com/albums/...psd6369b4b.jpg I'm the biggest rookie when it comes to DIY, so if anyone could walk me through this process as clearly as possible, that would be really appreciated! Thanks! |
You pretty much nailed it. Remove the bolts (might want to use some penetrating lube if they are feeling stuck or rusted) and then the exhaust will be hanging from the "black rubber looking piece" (IE - the hangers). Use some WD-40 to help you get the exhaust detached from the hangers, they will take a little prying, but they will come apart. Put a towel or something under all of this so you can rest it on the towel while you get out from under the car as not to scratch the shit outta your muffler.

So that's it? That's so much easier than I had imagine!
Do you know if the pipes get much hotter than the exhaust tips? I bought the VHT Caliper paint instead of the Flameproof one because I wanted more of a gloss finish (I will also spray some clearcoat over it). Would the paint be heat resistant enough to handle the rest of the exhaust that I pull out? Thanks |
That's it to take the exhaust off.. I'm not sure about the paint because I haven't ever painted an exhaust, maybe someone else can chime in on that one.

I'd suggest you not over-engineer this project and just paint the tips in place.
Any place on the exhaust you cannot see to paint..... won't be seen anyway. Unless, of course, you have friends that crawl around under your car with a mirror and flashlight .....;) humfrz |
Good point. Thanks a lot guys!
