Exhaust noise
Possibly not a very asked question but I think I've gotten to the age where I just don't enjoy the exhaust noise nearly as much as I used to. However, I do like the performance gains that it gives.
My set up is: 1. TRD air box 2. Speedfactory headers UEL with Cat 3. MXP over pipe and front pipe (catted) 4. Perrin catback (60mm) Tuned with OFT, I like the gains. However, I'm finding it too noisey. What are my options? Can I: 1. wrap the entire car in acoustic material for some deadening? 2. add a helmholtz resonator? 3. just get rid of the overpipe and front pipe and deal with the power loss? (probably minimal) 4. any other suggestions? TIA |
1. It'll work as long as you get good quality stuff and do it right (remove everything)
2. IIRC, Helmholtz and other resonators primarily fix drone. They will make your exhaust a little quieter as well. That said, if your catback is not resonated, a resonator would be a good place to start to make it a bit quieter. 3. Due to the front pipe being catted, I don't think you'll notice much difference going back to stock. I don't think you'll notice any difference with the overpipe at all. 4. You could try an Invidia Q300 catback. I think those are supposed to be quieter than the Perrin system. Other than that, I think you've hit all the bases. |
Is your Perrin cat back resonated? Shouldn't be loud if so. Otherwise, that would be your issue. I run the Q300 with a catless JDL UEL, overpipe, and I Nvidia catted front pipe and it's relatively quiet.

I think the easiest solution is to switch to stock catback exhaust. It should dramatically quiet things down.

Hi everyone.
For the sound material I'll probably look at the focal bam. It's what I have in the front doors and I quite like it. The Catback is resonated. I think my reservation for not switching to stock Catback is because I had the tips of the Perrin cut off and custom quads welded to fit the trd rear kit. Is the q300 much quieter? I thought Perrin was the quietest! Umm. So at this stage, try sound deadening? Because of the quad pipes.. Is the trd axle back an option? |
I would try just putting back on your stock FP if you still have it and see if that quiets it enough for you. That more restrictive cat may be just enough to tame it a bit. I personally don't like the sounds a lot of aftermarket front pipes seem to introduce. Also, Perrin and q300 are close enough volume wise that I don't think you would notice enough difference for it to be worth switching.

The Q300 is popular because it will tone down any front pipe and catless header combo out there for a great price that has great fitment. After using both the N1 and the Q300, they both do a great job at what they are intended for. If I had the time, I would swap between the N1 and Q300 every month depending on the mood I was in since they use the same mid pipe.

I think what I'll end up doing at this stage is putting on the stock Catback. If it goes well I'll sell the Perrin and weld custom tips onto the stock.
