Toll/Turnpike Sticker Problems

Alright, I got an Oklahoma Pike Pass sticker (I imagine it's the same as any other toll road or turnpike sticker) and can't get it to work for me. Wanting to know if anyone else has had any issues with it on their 86 or any other vehicle.

1. I have 50% tint on my windshield. Don't know what brand or whether or not it is metallic at all.

2. I 'installed' it by taping it to my windshield using Scotch tape right below and to the right a little of the rear view mirror.

I went through first toll area and no light came on so it must not have been recognized. Before I got to the exit, I peeled the backing off as if I were going to stick it to my windshield and just held it up, still nothing. I plan on driving back through it sometime and holding it outside the vehicle to verify it's activated and functioning properly, but wanted some feedback first.

The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority states it MUST be adhered to the glass windshield for it to function properly. I don't understand why that would make any difference, but it seems like maybe any air between the sticker and the glass could cause a problem. So if anyone knows how these work and could explain it to me I would appreciate it. Or have any ideas why mine wouldn't be working.

Not sure if this thread is the right place for this or not... but it is an electronic device. :D

I've heard of other people stick it on with scotch tape, attach it to another piece of plastic, and so on without issues. Only thing I can think of is your windshield tint has metallic content and it interferes with the RFID signal.

Yeah, that's what I'm afraid of.

I can always find a way to mount (and conceal) it on the exterior of the car if I have to. Just not sure how valid their "glass acts as an antenna" statement is.

Glass is not an antenna lol, I don't see why that'd be mandatory. I left mine in the passenger seat once and it worked (EZPass in NJ). Hold it up outside the window, it's possible it's just a dud.

Okay, did some more testing. Held it OUTSIDE the car against the windshield (still facing the correct direction) and it did not work. At the exit, I pressed it up against the glass firmly and it worked. Tried it two more times that way and it worked each time. Seems like any space between the unit and the glass causes it problems and I can't really say why it didn't work outside the vehicle.

Read a few places that people were sticking them to some clear plastics (like phone screen protectors) and sticking those to the windshield so they cpuld be removed easier. Gonna hunt some down and give it a try!

this system must be different than the EZ pass we use in the North East. Have never had an issue with Ez pass being read throught our BRZ's window.

Finally got unlazy and got a screen protector for this. Stuck my pike pass to it and put it on the glass and it's worked at least a dozen times without issue. Problem solve. :D
