Did anyone trade in the TC for FRS/BRZ
 

I'm just wondering if anyone traded the TC for the FRS/BRZ. And if you don't mind sharing how many miles you had on it an how much you got for it , ?

As im considering to trade in my 2005 TC with 50000miles on it and try to find out what's the best thing to do selling it privately or trade it in ,I'm aware of the fact that you get more for it selling it privately .

Haha I was wondering the same thing. I have an '07 and want to trade mine but you'd definitely be better at selling it on your to someone then going through the dealer. I have around 99,000 miles on it and everything looks and works great except some rim wear and exterior body issues... I haven't looked into the trade-in value just yet but I hope to sell and use the money for a down payment for the FR-S. This is my goal but not looking into this for a while still.

Why would you guys even have to ponder for 1 second what the best option is? If you car is worth $10000, they obviously aren't going to give you $10k for it because that's what they are going to try to get for it.

It's really simple: trading your car in is the same thing as going to a pawn shop to sell an item. They're always going to give you significantly less than it's worth otherwise they wouldn't be in business.

So the answer is to sell privately if you hope to get anything close to what the vehicle is worth.

The more they give you for it in trade, the higher the cost of the new car. It's a scale balance system. And since Scion offers the no haggling garbage insult method known as ImPure Pricing, you're doubly screwed.

Sell privately or take a multi-thousand dollar loss.

Everyone thinks that because KBB states their car is worth $x, that they should aim to get that much money from a dealership without taking into consideration that the dealership is only buying the car from you with the intent to it sell and make a profit. If you want to get as much money from your current car as possible, pay it off and sell it yourself. Otherwise, be prepared to bend over and take quite a hit for the convenience of instantly walking away from whatever you're driving today to drive home in a new FRS/BRZ.

To add to the OP's question, my roommate traded in his 2008 Scion tC 5-speed with 45k miles (no accidents, good condition) to a dealership just last month when he bought a 2012 WRX, and they gave him $8800. They may be able to sell it for $12k or so. Unfortunately Scions (with the exception of the FRS as we don't know yet) do not hold their value all that well it seems.

Another thing to consider is that while you may not make the same amount of money trading it in at the dealership you 1) know that they will take it versus waiting for months (or longer) for someone to buy your car, and 2) only being taxed on the difference of your new car minus the cost of the trade in. If the dealer offers you $1000 less than you want versus selling it but the cost in added tax for paying the full price of the new one then it may be wise to accept the dealer offer.

again, totally up to your negotiating skills and the state of your current ride. I will be trading in a 2007 tC with 45k miles on it (wife won't let me trade in the older Lexus so she is willing to swap cars so that I can trade hers for the FR-S).

I think the tC's trade in value is somewhere around 10k depending on condition. So if I were to guess, you're probably looking at around a 6-8k offer. But I guess your location could affect that as well. I know for my 03 Evo 8 KBB trade in value was around 10-12k. Luckily the dealer found someone willing to pay 10k. Personally I know I could have sold it privately for more, but this was just far more convenient. Plus I was doing the paperwork for the car right then so no one else could buy it. Who knows how long I could have been sitting waiting around for the car to sell. Car was almost paid off anyway so some of it went into the down payment.

You can have them appraise the car. After that you can decide whether you want to trade it in or sell it privately.

I traded in the release series 5 tc. 2009 23.4k miles got 14k for it. Had a cracked bumper. With drill holes and zip ties. Autocross cone damage. Had a few upgrades. Trading it in helps with tax ect. Not sure if a down payment works the same or not.

I haven't finalized anything yet, just did a preference order on Raven MT :D which should be showing up sometime next month. The quote I got when I went in this weekend for trade-in on my 2006 white tC was $9100 with 55K miles. Minor rim and body scratches but otherwise in great condition.

That's not too bad I'm expecting around 10k.

If you consider the tax break you going to get after 10k of from msrp .

I traded an '11 tC with 16,500 miles... They gave me 15k even for it. They listed it only as good condition even though the car was immaculate with the exception of 2 very small chips from pebbles off the road. They were hard-asses and wouldn't budge for any more.


I realize they need to make a profit but KBB does list TRADE-IN value and not just retail or private party value. If I could totally skip a dealer I believe I would.

I traded in an 06 tC, 123K miles, auto, leather, really good condition...$6100.

I got $12K for my 2010 tC with bald-ass tires and a bunch of door dings. 28K miles.

I only owed $8K on it so I was happy enough.

It's true of course what the others say about it being easier to trade-in, but if you happen to be driving a Corolla, Civic, or RSX...they sell themselves in days on AutoTrader.

The last time I used AutoTrader to sell a Civic, it was sold the morning the magazine came out within 2 hours of it's release(this was before the internet). I had to be awaken from my slumber on a Saturday to provide a test drive to two different people waiting outside my house. The second guy bought it after a 1 mile drive, while the first guy threw a fit that I didn't wait for his offer(he said he'll think while the other guy tested). :)

AutoTrader folks...it works. Sold a 3000GT VR-4 earlier this year to a guy from Georgia. Picked him up at the airport and he drove it home.
