That car was a rally spec 86 built by Tommi Makkinen's workshop, and was simply brought over for Toyoda-san to drive during the final legs of their wider testing program conducted down under recently. Word is that Toyoda himself commissioned TM to build him that rally car. But anyway it had nothing to do with any future plans or development of a production awd turbo 86.

From all reports it is basically a group N WRX in an 86 body at which point it may well even have an EJ motor in it.

Sure! Just buy a WRX, pull the body off your car, bolt it onto the WRX chassis and presto you have the same car.
This is a classic case of when does an "FRS" stop being an FRS?
