Analog solution to cold-start house-shake

I've had my OFH and Manzo cat-back for awhile now. I love the sound they make going down the road. But I don't like the sound they make in my garage first thing in the morning. And neither do my neighbors. The noise only lasts for about a minute but that's long enough to piss off a lot of people. It shakes the house so bad that the ceiling in my garage actually collapsed onto my car. It didn't do too much damage (to the car) but that was the last straw.

Something had to be done.
So I decided to try the brute force approach. How about using fiberglass insulation as a muffler?
So I got a chunk of insulation and put it up against a backstop.

Then I just back up into the insulation until it is well compressed. It acts as a very nice soft stop.

It doesn't silence it completely but it does stop the house from shaking.

The car is loud because it's dumping fuel with lots of ignition retard on a cold start to warm up the cats.

The way you're parked now may be the reason the house shakes so bad. The sound resonates even more off the back wall and the sides with the exhaust facing the back wall.

It may be better if you parked your car in the other direction with the exhaust tips facing outside.

That's the way I used to park. With the exhaust facing the door. That's the reason why the ceiling collapsed where it did. but I had to keep the door closed while the car warmed up otherwise my neighbors would call the police. I mean it is loud.

Have you tried putting a banana in your tailpipe?

radroach 11-12-2014 03:51 PM

Could this cause your engine to run rich and backfire?

Insulating your startup noise is a great idea IMO, but I think we can help come up with a few other solutions for you.

Perhaps keep the same insulation setup, but cut a couple holes and add an insulated tube to let some exhaust out?

Why not just make the changes to the engine map?

ohh boy....

Do you not have the means to tweak your tune instead of baffling your tailpipes? I mean I get that this is the non-digital solution, but why can't it be digital? That fiberglass insulation is going to micro-scratch the hell out of your bumper over time.

What about some sort of sound tube from the tail pipe. Similar to the effects of the one in the intake.
