does the guy have insurance? Did you get it from him?

Jaden 11-11-2014 04:29 PM

body shop estimates..

Now my body shop estimated 5200 for the repair, his insurance company estimated 4300 for the repair.

Now mind you, that was with color matched paint job and it cost me $60 for a replacement light, which should be here by the end of the week, even so, the only conclusion I can come to is that body shops are rip off insurance scams basically.

I'll have to do about two more hours worth of work to make it perfect, and most of the reworking I did is actual metal manipulation, not tons of bondo.

I've come up with a way to not have to paint match as well, so it looks like forced induction will be coming my way sooner rather than later once I get the insurance check.

Thanks, I was pretty happy with the results...

Yeah all he got was a little scratch on the rubber part of his bumper and I was a little irate, let's just say I didn't let him get away unscathed and he tried to have the police arrest me...lol...

It took them 45 minutes to explain to him that they couldn't arrest me for what I did...

Basically what I did was this...(not to him, to fix the damage)

1) I tried to remove the tail light... (couldn't it was pinched by the folded quarter panel).

2) drilled out a hole right at the bend where the corner of the light is.

3) used a ratchet tie down strap that I fed through the hole attached to a frame on my garage and tightened it way down so that there was pressure on it.

4) went over close to the car and used my body weight on the tie down strap to pull the metal back out.

5) used a 22.99 body repair hammer and dolly kit from o'reilly's to beat the sheet metal back in place.

6) drilled another hole towards the back of the quarter panel under and to the left where it meets the trunk and used the tie down strap again from the other side to put pressure on it pulling it back towards the trunk.

7) Did some more hammer and dolly work from inside and outside to get it back into form, constantly comparing it to the other side.

8) used an adhesive metal mesh to cover the two holes I drilled and sanded it as flush as possible.

9) Used some bondo to cover the mesh over the holes and over the hammered part to even it out.

10) repeated step 9 after sanding it back down to almost metal a total of 4 times, so that there was very little bondo but it held the correct shape and was flat.

11) sprayed automotive primer over the sanded area.

It was dark on Sunday night by this time and it didn't turn out perfect, although it's close enough for govt work. I'll end up spending another couple of hours on it and then it will be as close to perfect as it is likely to get.

Of course, you might not like what they're being replaced with, but I don't give a shit what other people like...lol...(with the exception of my wife).

I won't do a vinyl wrap because I don't like when the door jams trunk, engine compartment etc.. don't match. That's the same thing slowing me down from doing a dipped color change.

No, what I decided to do was dip a dragon that starts on the hood and wraps around the car with one claw gripping the gas cap cover (which will be wrapped in a black pearl or gold pearl wrap) ending with the tail at the repaired portion.

I'll dip it in black and then do a green metalizer over the black, OR I might do the outline in black over the top of alternating green and blue metalizer, then I'll dip the wheels to match.

Jaden

p.s. now you've got me thinking, I can do the same thing with a wrap and it will be less prone to peeling...shit...got some figuring to do...

It's hard for me to tell if you are being sarcastic here.
