massachusett's front license law

When driving around in Mass, i sometimes see cars without front license plates.

I'm considering taking my front license off. However, online search shows its required. what does everyone think?

It's illegal unless you have an early green number plate (they stopped issuing these in 1988). That being said, it's a $35(?) fine if you do not have one. I'll pay the fee before I'll put a front plate on my BRZ. You usually won't get stopped for it unless you're doing something else you're not supposed to and they'll tack the lack of front plate onto your other infractions. The nail that sticks out gets hammered.

Of course I say this now, and I'm going to get stopped tonight. That would be my luck...

Beware, front plate ticket IS a moving violation.

What does that mean exactly? Does your insurance increase if you get one?

Yep, and it's a surchargeable infraction, so it'll keep your insurance up for a while.

My uncle and I have been driving without our front plate for years. I keep my plate in the car and duck tape. If I ever get pulled over I'll apologize and tape it on then a there. No encouraging you to break the law but I am not worried about it. If you get pulled over for being an ass and the cop wants to screw you then yea, its another violation of they wanted to be a huge duche.

Last I heard it was a fix it ticket. I've been pulled over for it before.

I would just get a license relocation kit and call it a day

I know a couple people on here who do this, but they leave the relocation kit in their car. If they get pulled over they just say to the officer, "Sorry I just came from a car meet and forgot to put my plate back on before I left." Then they put the plate on right there and 95% of the time the officer will be understanding leave them alone.

I have my front plate mounted with the factory kit...I actually don't mind how it looks and I think it looks better than the relocation kit.

I have a Green plate on my other car, sometimes I wish I could figure out how to transfer it over to the BRZ but it would be nigh impossible as it's under my father's name and the second it gets transferred over to me they would require I replace the plate with red plates.

I got nailed in my miata with no front plate over the summer. I was running without a front plate since I got the car (2010) without any issues but it finally caught up to me. While the reason they pulled me over was for my ride height, they went over the car and also dinged me for the front plate and for an expired inspection sticker.

As far as the plate being a moving violation, I struggled to find information on if it really was, but since I was fighting those other two violations, I figured I would fight it as well. I would honestly pay a yearly fee of $100 to be able to run a single plate.

Single plate does look so much better but thankfully fits decently in our front grill.

I haven't had a front plate since I bought the car, and I have been pulled over once already (verbal warning for speeding, bah) and he didn't even mention my front plate missing. But like others said it is a moving violation, so if you find a state trooper having a bad day...

Blizzz 12-10-2014 09:29 AM

It's not a moving violation, it's just a flat fee.

Not to derail the topic, but I hadn't really fully understood why people disliked front plates so much. But then I saw the new Mazda 3 with front plates.

I get it now.
