GrimmSpeed Intake Before and After OFT Tune + Review

3 Attachment(s)
Hi Everyone! I am posting my review of the GrimmSpeed Intake Before and After OFT tune with Shiv.

First off let me start by saying THANK YOU to Matt B with GS and Shiv with OFT. Both were professional and very helpful through the process. I started with an Apexi Drop and Mishimoto intake tube (I already had a Greddy SP AB Exhaust) and I was happy with all of it for the dollars spent, minimal increase felt but ran nice and felt a bit stronger than stock. I switched to mixing race gas to net 93+ around the same time and have been running this way for the last two months or so. For those that aren't running 93+, you are missing out. The car runs like it should with higher octane.
GrimmSpeed Intake Review
I followed the development thread early on and wanted to get the intake to do a compare vs what I had and then with an OFT tune for THIS Intake. The packaging and intake quality are top notch. The install was very straightforward. The Air box is beautiful. If I could wish for improvements it would be molded gaskets for the intake tube and snorkel and ceramic tube option for the intake tube. The gaskets could seal up things more air tight but Performance wise I am sure this would be minimal but nicer aesthetically. I mean honestly, I wish there were a carbon intake tube option but hey this intake is NOT $800. For the price I cannot imagine better and that is my .02 and simple reality. I have been involved in releasing a variety of hi-tech electronic equipment and harnesses at my real job and I understand the commercial realities of getting everything you need and want while selling at a fair marketable price. Everything is a compromise, but this intake gives you the best for your dollar and that is my .02.
On the Road
The intake struck me right away as running so well from the first start up, no stumbles, check engine lights or rough running. I felt it had more grunt which surprised me and I am happy to report it is louder than a stock set up but not by much. I don't like loud so it suits me well. My mileage went up by 2-3% which was a bonus. All in all it just seemed to run a bit stronger with more torque. I drove it for about two weeks before visiting Shiv for a tune.
GrimmSpeed and OFT Tune
Shiv took the car and drove it a couple days before visiting the dyno shop in Hayward. He took logs and adjusted to maximize the tune and overall running. I will post the before and after dyno he sent me which shows some nice gains after the tune using the GrimmSpeed Intake. I could tell right away the difference as I pulled away driving the car for the first time. Goes like stink!! After an hour of driving, I was able to give her a good run to redline and again was smiling to reach triple digits so quickly. It definitely makes passing easier lol. Shiv tuned the crossover around 4k pretty aggressively so it gets a bit loud, but this can always be tuned down a bit. I am a happy camper at Stage 1 OFT with the GS Intake. My mileage on the freeway was better too WIN/WIN. Taking into consideration the lower numbers of the AT cars I am pretty happy with the results. I will say it again, I can't imagine a better upgrade for the money than this intake and if you can afford BOTH, the OFT with GrimmSpeed Intake is an awesome Combo. I hope to get fresh numbers with Exhaust Components as I build to a Stage Two OFT. Shiv will post the tune for OFT GrimmSpeed Intake Customers after SEMA.

For anyone considering this combo, it is money well spent!!

So the question is, will there be an off the shelf tune available on the OFT for this intake.

You must have missed this from the post:

Thanks for the feedback, Fletch and thanks for offering up your car for the tuning!

@F1fletch what setup is the dyno baseline in the chart (GS intake - no oft, gs intake - oft ots tune, stock intake - oft tune, etc)?

The baseline here is a stock, untuned car.

I would love to see intake makers compare tuned stock to tuned aftermarket. It seems like nobody is interested in this though, probably because it makes the numbers less impressive.

I believe the baseline here is actually stock auto + GS intake, but Fletch can confirm.

Part of the reason that we didn't do what you're suggesting is simply a lack of time, but also because tuning can be massively different from one tuner/dyno to another. People get hung up on numbers and then manufacturers and tuners are messing with calibrations, ECU tricks and so on to compete for bragging rights. We'd much prefer to keep things simple and let the intake speak for itself. In no time, I'm sure that the information you're looking for will be available from other third parties that have no vested interest in the success of any one part/brand/tuner/etc. That's the good stuff (assuming that everything is done correctly).

With that said, I'm sure that when we can find the time, we'll be back on the dyno with our tuner for stock and GS intake tuning in the spring when we're testing other products.

Thanks for the feedback!

Wow I cant believe I missed this thread! Dyno looks good I cant wait to pick this up + OFT. I was waiting to see someone with this combo pop in with their results...

EDIT: @Shiv@Openflash how did the intake take to the tuning from your end?

civicdrivr 11-06-2014 10:59 AM

Gains look good, but can we get a confirmation that the numbers were GS intake, no tune & GS intake w/ tune?

And no stock intake numbers? :(

Figured I'd post this here as well, since a lot of people are asking for it.

@F1fletch, can you confirm that the 'Before' was with the GrimmSpeed Intake installed but no tuning and that the 'After' was with the GrimmSpeed Intake installed AND tuning?

I've looked back and realize I misread OpenFlash's wording, so I'm no longer certain. They did not confirm if the intake was installed in the baseline run. You may well be correct.

Nice looking intake, 1 more HP than the skunk2 that moto east tuned but the GS was on a stock car so thats a plus, more overhead with supporting mods.

Based on the title it seems the only difference was the tune. There was no baseline without an intake.

GrimmSpeed intake and no tune was the baseline.
