FRS vs BRZ
no it's not a should i get a frs or brz thread.
Subaru techs always deal with boxer engines, toyota techs don't. has anyone run into any service problems with engine work with toyota when it comes to the boxer engine? |
 yes
But I was pretty early on Long story short, they filled my coolant overflow reservoir with washer fluid during a routine service (because the only blue liquid in Toyotas is washer fluid and our overflow tanks are where Toyota puts their washer reservoirs) |

Meh, car is still running fine more than a year later. I had them document the whole incident which basically gives me an infinite no questions asked warranty against corrosion in my cooing system.

For routine stuff I doubt the Subaru techs are significantly more competent than the Scion/Toyota/Lexus techs. Oil is oil and nuts and bolts work the same on a Kia as they do on a spaceship and we still manage to fuck those up.
For the complicated stuff ($$$) you want warranty, that will ONLY go through Toyota so you're out of options there. If you're out of pocket for the complicated stuff I'd go to an independent shop (if you can't do it yourself), you'll likely get the best mechanics and the best rates. Complicated in my opinion is pretty much anything that moves that can cause problems if not done properly (i.e. entire powertrain from gas tank to rubber on the road, suspension). |
Techs are techs, Toyota is better cuz they don't go randomly void your warranty for touching any thing in the car.
|
You can get a better price with a BRZ. You can really bargain them down a lot. Paying less than invoice should be a cinch.
|
I'm sure it really depends. How do you know there aren't any idiot Subaru techs? You wouldn't know who works on your car unless you do it yourself.
|
Once I'm out of warranty, I plan to take my FR-S to an independent Subaru shop for work I can't or won't do myself. I figure why not?
|
I chose the FRS because i liked the toyota dealer more than the subaru dealer. Subaru dealers are rated pretty low around my area, but Longo was rated pretty good.

...well except for the occasional alignment. Those racks are a-spensive! |

But I do have control over what professionals I do use. I am lucky in I have a dealership that has a great service department that is honest and fair (until proven otherwise at any rate). If I didn't I would certainly be finding somebody else that was. |

I plead guilty and submit myself to the mercy of the internet. |
I don't think it's too big of a deal. Just keep the Subaru dealer as back up just in case the Toyota dealer doesn't work out.
Fyi, I'll probably order my own genuine Subaru parts and have the basic services done by my local mechanic who owns his own shop and does the work himself right in front of me at an affordable rate. |
