Big brake upgrade + Winter fitment

Hey guys, I have searched a little the forum and saw few people's car journal. However, I was still wondering.

What I want:

  • If I get 18x9.5 wheels for the summer
  • and 16x6.5 steel wheels for the winter
  • Well fitted for the looks
  • More brake power and more heat dissipation (so better heat management)

What I know:
Brake Pads are the most important for braking power, but brake caliper helps ventilation.

What I want to know:
  • What fitment of brakes will work for both set-ups?
  • What looks the best?
  • Which brake calipers should I be going with 4 pistons or 6 pistons and what’s the difference other than fitment?
  • Which brake pads should I get?
  • What does 2, 4 and 6 piston look like J

Not saying it isn't doable, but a number of the more serious brake kits omit things like actual paint and dust boots, which basically makes them not exactly salt friendly.

The ap sprint/endurance kits for example or wildwood.

If you want dust boots and 16" clearance you're probably looking at a set of subaru 4 pots or nissan calipers.

I'm not linking you a picture, thats what google is for.

What you mean by paint...?

Paint on the caliper, some more competition aimed calipers are anodized or other wise coated since paint just burns and browns with the heat from track use. Look at StopTech Trophy calipers verse there normal offerings. For winter use anodizing probably wont offer enough protection. Dust boots on the pistons would certainly be necessary.

Before I got a daily truck I was still using my BRZ in the winter and my plan was to just swap the brakes back to stock, salt eats everything. Including your aluminum rotor hats on 2 piece rotors.

What are you doing that you're making too much heat for the OEM brakes to dissipate? A very simple intermediate solution would be porsche gt3 brake ducts, for about $30 each. What pads and fluid have you tried and why weren't you satisfied with them?

17 inch wheels might be a better winter wheels choice for BBK.

My recommendation is XXR527 17X8.25 +25 --------- Cheap, Clear Sti BBK, and fit as well as 18X9.5 summer wheels.

255/35R18 TE37SL 18X9.5 +40 is my summer setup, definitely clear STi Brembo.

225/45R17 XXR527 17X8.25 +25 is my winter setup. These wheels clear STi BBK also. And the +25 small offset make this setup look as fit as my summer setup. BTW, 17X8.25 +35 XXR527 will NOT clear Sti Brembo.

I might upload some winter wheels fitness picture on my Car journal later(probability at the end of Nov.). I have tested fit them on my car with tire on, definitely looks as good as my summer setup because of the +25 small offset. You dont hav to re-do the alignment, the outer position of the wheels is the same as the summer setup, diameter difference is less than 3%, no fender gap, and looks "meaty" also.

Would the OEM wheels fit on those?? I think of staying OEM wheels and getting 18x8.5 - 18x9.5 wheels for summer.

OEM wheels will not clear STi Brembo.

You might need spacers.

By the sound of it, you don't need a BBK at all.

Different calipers do very little (or nothing) for ventilation.

What kind of driving are you doing that you need better heat management? What are you currently running for pads and fluid?

Mikeez 11-07-2014 03:16 PM

I want it also for looks ;). Fine you caught me, I don't need heat management xD... I do street driving and I am adding m turbo this summer so I was hoping to get more braking distance covered lol..

wparsons 11-07-2014 03:59 PM

The first step to improving braking distances is better tires, then pads/fluid. Bigger brakes on the stock tires (or equivalent) isn't going to make you stop any faster at all.

If you're going turbo, and want a BBK, you're going to have to factor in extra cost for bigger winter rims as well, or swap out the brakes for winter. There's no magic bullet that is going to work with 16's that also fills out 18's better than stock.

I know what about spacers and stock OEM wheels (17")? Usually its pads and fluid ;) then tire... LOL ;D
Any 4 pots will work on 17" and 18" if I get spacers on my 17s?

Are you trying to fill out larger diameter wheels, or do you just want flashier calipers? Bigger rotors that fill out 18's better aren't going to fit under 17's at all, regardless of how many spacers you try to run.

Spacers only help if the caliper is hitting the spokes, not the barrel of the wheel.

Changing out the calipers with stock rotors isn't going to fill out bigger wheels better than stock does.

So ask yourself this. What are you actually trying to achieve? Figure that out, then look for what you need to get you there.

As for pads/fluids/tires... if you can lock up the brakes (engage ABS), then tires are the weak point. On stock tires, you can easily lock up the brakes under all situations. That's braking POWER. Adding a BBK or pads with more bite isn't going to make you stop faster at all.

Now if you're getting fade on a track, that's thermal capacity. To stop fade you need pads and fluid that will take more heat. That's not braking POWER.

100% stock braking system with sticky tires will still engage ABS on the street and most conditions, but on a hot day with the tires up to temperature (on a track) they don't have the bite to lock them up anymore.

update some winter wheels installed pics.
