Winter driving prep
 

What do people recommend to apply prior winter driving on salty roads?

I'm looking for products that will protect the paint. The car has a 3M clear bra up front so I'm not necessarily concerned about chips, just mostly keeping the paint looking good.

Save yourself the bullshit and go buy a winter beater. It's the best thing you can do for the winter.

Another vote for a winter beater, better to have some asshole who can't drive in the snow plow into a car you don't care about.

Wash it regularly, make sure you have a decent coat of wax on it.

Most important thing is to wash the underbody when the roads dry out. This will help control rust as best as possible. Many coin-ops can do this.

As far as winter prep goes, I can't afford a beater and FR-S is my daily driver. I enjoy detailing so I go a bit farther than most --

Prep, in order:

1. Clay bar (clean large bits stuck in paint)
2. Klasse AIO (chemical cleaner)
3. Klasse HSG (heavy-duty acrylic sealant)
4. Collinite 845 (heavy-duty wax)

This gives 6+ months of protection under good conditions, and seems to last long enough to survive a Chicago winter.

To clean the car depends on if you've got a garage or not. I throw a jacket on and do the GDWM with hot water and ONR Wash & Wax, it works marvels.

If you don't have a garage to wash in, it's going to be tough. Regular touchless washes will easily halve the time of any LSP, but there's not really any other option if you want to keep it clean.

I thought about getting a winter beater but I live 1.5 miles from work and have the ability to work from home.

I'm looking for what types of products to buy, sounds like I'll need a paint sealant and just keep up with the washes.

A good sealant is all you need. :P

during winter months, i wont touch the car with a wash mit,

i'll wax the car everyother week until the first snow fall or until they throw salt down on the road

after the first snow fall or salt from then all, all i do are pre-soaks

ive been using Adams car wash with a Uber foam cannon
will let it sit on the car for 5-10 minutes, and repeat if i have to


than comes the pressure washer!
that usually can do the job for me for the winter, once warmer weather comes, thats when the car will get its spring time detail :thumbsup:


ive also rocked painters tape (not on this car yet) but on my previous car the entire winter to avoid paint chips in the bumper, debating on doing that this year with the FRS

but i tend to throw it in a different bottle with a biggle nozzle handle

Wash, clay-bar and wax before winter hits. Sealant on front and tail lights. During winter, I just rinse down on non rainy days with water hose.

As a norwegian, this is what we are used to for half the year.

Use a sealant or good quality wax. Don't forher the wheels!

Rinse the car often as often as you can, don't forget the undercarrige and brakes.

Use a petroleum based pre wash before washing, this removes much of the salt. Follow up with an alkaline prewash, Surfex HD is a prefered brand here. Use plenty of chemicals, those are cheap - a car is expensuve.

If you can wash often (more than once a week), use touchless washing two or three times between regular washing to keep swirlm marks away.

Do not park the car warm if there is salt on the car, there will be less rust that way. A clean salt-free car should be parked warm if possible.
