taller final drive ratio
 

if i'm looking for better gas mileage, does this part give me a taller ratio in gears 4-6? i can't read japanese and the chart doesn't make an sense to me.

Not worth the money. You'll be spending a couple thousand dollars unless you can change the gears in the transmission yourself, and even then you'll still be spending close to $2000 just to increase your MPG's by an almost negligible amount. You won't get a RTI until many years down the road. If you want better mileage, either change your driving style or buy a different car. These cars can only get so many mpg. If you're driving is already conservative and you're already at the top of that spectrum and want more, you need to get a different car.

Also just an fyi, a taller final drive like your title states refers to the gearing in the rear end of the car while the link you posted shows replacing the actual gears in the transmission. It's 2 different things.

if you want better mileage, learn to drive conservatively (like coasting to a stop in gear, downshifting for high incline hills, never going wot, and being super gentle at start)


and inflate your tires as much as possible before deformation. And if you have super wide/sticky tires, change them out to something that's not wide or sticky when they wear out.


also, if you're really cheap and don't care about looks, there's a lot of cardboard areo that you can put together for improved aerodynamics.

Ok, so I have a question. Completely OT, but something I have been wondering for a couple years now. Many of the people that have upwards of 400+hp have a hard time keeping the car hooked up even with 285 wide tires. I can even remember one member detuning his car back down to 300ish because it was just too much to keep a handle on. Also, if I remember, aren't we gear limited to around 160mph? So, would going to a taller gear ratio solve an traction problems at all? And with currently available ratios, what speed could we end up getting to with 400ish hp?

I can understand the interest. After doing a 4.56 diff swap, I wish my 6th gear was more of an over drive to get the RPMs down on road trips.

Get an auto, almost a 1k rpm difference at 70mph.

Or just buy a different car

Its a US only problem. In Asia or most country. The speed limit is only 100km (58mile) , basically 2k rpm in our 6MT (dirt quiet....) however in US where lots places speed limit is at 80mile...which is 3.5k rpm in MT.... Making 86 simply too noisy to drive at said speed limit 4hrs or over..... I do wish our six gear is taller for that matter alone.

Actually 100kph is 62.5mph not 58. Also most states the limit is 55mph unless it's an interstate in which case then the highest I believe is 80mph which is in Texas,? Where it really shows would be in England where their motorways average 70mph but traffic regularly travels at over 90mph. I do agree this car could do with a way taller 6th gear.

For 2k you can find a manual Corolla or an Echo that will get unbeatable mileage.

100kmh is 62mph....just for clarification
