my desire to go with an aftermarket single din is sound quality, but in my opinion most single dins from alpine/pioneer/kenwood look terribly cheap.

Pioneer single dins have flashy lights but can be set up dim and one color for the discerning individual

Yeah, I think my top choice at the moment is the DEH-80PRS

i can't justify that on this car.

Buy an older, used radio. Some of the old Alpine CDA-98** series were among the best radios they ever produced. Most people that have them took care of them and they have like 500+ colour button options, so you can match to your interior. I still have a CDA-9833 and it works perfect. I don't have it installed in this car but who knows, maybe one day I'll put it in for the same reasons you noted. A CDA-9835 would be a good find if you can find one.

I'd go with "nakamichi" if you want something simple and high quality. The older models will more of your taste.
