Glasspack to get rid of rasp?
 

We finally had to address our falling apart exhaust on our 87' 300ZX. The muffler had fallen off years ago and the pipe right after the cat was hanging - essentially discconected, also the headers needed be patched as well.

It sounded pretty good, running through a crapped out cat. The drone as usual...became annoying after the commutes.

Going to Willets Point, AKA the cheapest place to get work done our your car. We had a pipe welded from the header, out to the back of the car with a cheap muffler put on the end, pretty much OEM like without the cat in the middle. It sounded like shit. This cost $150 and was legitimate quality work. Dem welds.

We recently had the muffler taken off and fitted on a universal Maganflow muffler. It sounds good, until you hit 4K RPMs. The rasp reminds me of Civics with fart cannons. No, quite worse in fact. It's downright embarrassing to go up on the powerband.

I know running a cat would help with rasp, but this car is worth about $2000 and i quite like some engine noise. Would running a Glasspack (cherry bomb) in place where the cat was (right after header, before the muffler) help get rid of the rasp? Or should i just run a cat?


By the way, Willets Point is going away soon. If you're a gearhead and are heading to NYC anytime soon, it's a place to visit. Very old school.

Maybe a resonator will help? I know Helmholtz resonators do great to get rid of drone. Idk about rasp though.

The glass pack would act as a resonator quite nicely. It's what my old Supra's exhaust was: 3" piping to a glass back then back to a modified 3" inlet magnaflow with dual tips. As it was turbo it was quiet...ish.

That was the thing, i wasn't sure if a resonator would actually help. Some would argue it only helps with drone and not rasp.
Though you could argue a glasspack is in part a resonator...
