Lotus to help make motors?
This article over at Edmunds Inside line got me thinking.
Lotus, Toyota 'Taking Relationship to The Next Level' By Mike Magrath | September 17, 2010 At the British Embassy in Tokyo today, Lotus CEO Dany Bahar gifted Toyota President Akio Toyoda with a Lotus Elise powered by the very last 2ZZ-GE VVTL-i engine. The end of the 2ZZ-GE means that Lotus is out an engine for its Elise and Exige cars. This lack of an engine, and a long history of working together, has prompted Lotus and Toyota to "create tailor-made powertrain solutions for future Lotus cars." Earlier, we'd announced that Lotus was using a Toyota-sourced six-speed automatic in the new Evora automatic that was heavily tweaked by Lotus. This could spell the end of after-the-fact tweaking for Lotus and perhaps a hot new motor for Toyota...say...for the FT-86. But that's pure speculation. More details on this new, speacial relationship will be announced September 30th at the Paris Auto show. We all know this will not produce a motor for the FT86 but it could help Toyota get back into making more aggressive motors for its own cars through the help of Lotus? It is using Tesla's battery tech on the Rav 4 plug-in. Why not use Lotus to help make more aggressive, fun motors for your new sporty out look on the company! |
