Is there a clutch delay valve on BRZs? Chirping noises...
I owned an M3 before buying my BRZ, so I'm used to weird moaning/grunting noises from the rear diff and things like that. M3s have this part called a "clutch delay valve." Many M3 owners take it out for faster and smoother shifts. I'm wondering if there is a clutch delay valve that we can remove on the BRZ, because I'm letting the clutch out faster than it is actually "catching" if you know what I mean. It's quite annoying, and I intentionally have to delay letting the clutch out in between shifts for a smoother transition. It's most noticeable shifting into 6th gear.
Also, I'm noticing this weird chirping/quacking noise every time I let off the clutch pedal to engage the next gear. It's most noticeable when I'm in motion on the freeway. There are so many noises this car has compared to my old car that I can't tell if it's good or bad. Please advise!!! Thanks! In case you're wondering, the car drives fine. I'm just puzzled by the weird noises and clutch timing. Currently has 2,100 miles on it. |
Not sure what goes on in the brz but here's what subaru does on the sti. http://www.iwsti.com/forums/diy-mods...-method-4.html
They add the delay valve to prevent you from shocking the drive train by sidestepping the clutch or just releasing it quickly. The clutch itself is also sprung too for this same reason. Removing the valve from the slave cylinder is more likely to make your shifts jerky than anything else. |
I don't believe our cars have a clutch delay valve. I know some people remove the spring on our clutch pedal to give it a more solid/less toy like fee. People have reported smoother shifting after removing that spring.
I was always under the impression that the delay was actually in the throttle itself due to the drive by wire set up we have. This is my first car that has a drive by wire throttle and I hate it!. Oh and that noise is coming from the throwout bearing and is normal. Some peoples are louder then others. My car makes the noise, but it isn't loud enough to bother me. |
There isn't a clutch delay valve but the clutch pedal always feels a little vague to me.

Chirps, rattles, buzzing, motor boating, diesel like sounds, cyclic chassis droning etc...they come and they go...eh(shrug) ... now that I have some miles on it, and it has been reliable, I no longer worry about the sounds. Now about the automatic headlight setting that shuts off the headlights only about 98% of the time..damn that 2% |
It was never 100% confirmed that there isn't a delay valve as nobody has dissected the master and slave yet.
Regardless, the sound is likely something else (clutch fork is dry, etc) |
Thanks all for your responses.
