Reasons to buy / not buy a twin?
 

For a pure performance standpoint (not practicality or other reasons such as accommodating family)....


What are some reasons to spend ~$30k on a twin? what are its "selling points"?





What are some reasons to not and buy some other performance vehicle for that amount of money?

HP per dollar...they suck.

Fun per dollar...they are awesome

If you like to stand on an accelerator and blast down onto an interstate...they suck.

If you like to feather your gas/clutch and steering whell while clover-leafing off or onto an interstate...they rule.

If you like the sound of crickets...they rule.

If you like a quiet ride...they suck.

Handling and lightweight is what largely sold me on this car. They just don't make smaller sporty cars like this anymore. Second is looks This car has sex appeal all over it. Thirdly, it has adequate cargo space and rear seats if needed.

Buying new, nothing comes remotely close in terms of performance, potential, and value in the $25,000 market.

Members of my family (father, uncle, aunt, mom) are trying to convince me to buy a 2014 3 series on clearance..

I am young, single and dont care for luxury... but like sport/performance.

anyway...

one of their big talk points was how the bmw has more hp and a faster 0 to 60 time and stays planted at high speeds

I said, brz is a pure raw sports car.... is lightweigh and handles great. yes factory hp is "low" but the engine is capable of adding a lot more and it can be done if i need it.

any other points i can throw in their faces? lol

Twins are cheaper to own, maintain and modify. I'd say fun, but that's purely subjective.


At the end of the day, if its you fronting up the cash, then who cares what they think? ;)


Rent both for a day each (if you can) and see what fits you best.

Yea I agree its my money etc... I already know... I would just like to argue better with them. Mom says she is concerned about safety since its small and lightweight but ultimately its my choice. Oh she also hopes it has a high resale value haha.

Use the Porsche angle. That's a small car in general, but do they view one unsafe? Show them the safety rating of a twin, and how it has enough airbags to turn into a beach ball!


Some would even argue a twin making you a better driver in the long run :)

The twins are more nimble and can help avoid a crash better then the Bimmer.

The FRS and BRZ are IIHS top safety picks from the day they were released and got an acceptable rating in the small overlap test that kills cars. the 2012 328i scored a marginal which is bellow the FRS.

FRS will end up much cheaper in the long run for maintenance. IE tires and brakes and little things.

The smiles to miles ratio are going to be incredibly higher in the FRS if their are turns on your drive. The Bimmer might make you smile a bit when you step on it, but it will die down eventually, and it will cost much more to get that smile back.

The FRS aleady handles great straight out of the box. Kill the stock tires and the replace them with good summer tires and you have an even better handling car, and it's just regular maintenance.

Good on gas for such a sporty car.

That's my main problem right now is parents concern about safety. Even though I'm paying for it I want to make them feel better about it. just let them know it's got an overall 5 star crash safety rating from the national highway traffic safety administration. So it is safe for what it is.

Plus, who wants German repair bills 5-10 yrs down the road?

If you're deciding between a 320i and a BRZ, I'd highly recommend you test-drive both. Vastly different driving experience between the two. The 3-series is plush/comfy and will have loads more low-end torque. In comparison, the BRZ is unrefined and harsh, but with better feedback, handling and acceleration (if you redline the engine).

The 3-series is probably the better choice for the general population, but if you honestly don't care about luxury/refinement, and just want the sportier car, you will love the BRZ.

If you want a minimalistic sports car with visceral feedback and quick reflexes, don't mind the low hp numbers.. If you can deal with the quirks and noises due to its lightweight, lack of insulation and economy heritage..
Then this car can be as much fun as a supercar... In the real world..

The twins are quite planted at high speeds. If i could recall, the twins are quite cozy at 120mph. The problem is i can't recall... :D

To repeat what everybody has already said:
BRZ =safety, sports control, lower operating costs (repairs, insurance, etc) good fuel costs and so on and so on.
You can always play the Toyota/Subaru reliability card as well.
Point out to them that many accidents involving young people are attributed to too many people in the car and that will not be an issue with the BRZ (unless all your friends come from somewhere over the rainbow or have no legs)
Like Mim said the inside of these cars turn into beach balls if the air bags deploy!
