Rear suspension/axle tech for non owners
 

Hi all,

I'm hoping we can have a discussion about the frs rear suspension in a non frs application.

I'm currently fitting this to a different car and need to decide what to do with the axle situation. The car is going to be running 15" wheels, it weighs 2500 lbs, has 300tq and will be used for drifting only.

Everything looks good to me except the axles. I can change to a hub with bigger splines and a bigger axle if need be but I don't want to.

Anyhow, I guess I'm mainly looking for people who have broken axles. My questions are:

Anyone here with similar specs doing similar things with the car?
At what point do the axles fail? Ho often do they break?

DSS makes axles for this car. Otherwise I'm not much help to you.

I was told that even if the DSS, if the geometry is fucked due to slamming the car, it will still add significant strain on the axles that it can still break. Raising the diff may be a better option to solve the issue, rather than hoping for a stronger piece of metal will hold up with a fucked up angle.

Even with DSS, you can still possibly mess things up if you intend to mess it up. There's no way around it. Yes you can push the differential up, but based on funding, it's probably a pretty penny as well as illegal in some racing sanctions (hence why there is little support). I think Manji from the Aussie land is working on a solution.

Thanks all for the quick replies. I understand since my questions are basically irrelevant to you guys with FRS so it means a lot. If we can get any usable data out of this I'll share it here for sure.

I felt it relevant to mention it's not in an frs because of these reasons. I'm not bound by a sanctioning body so the plan is to put it high in the chassis to get everything level.

Upon inspection the outer spline ends look pretty small next to other toyota 8" axles. The CVs are tiny as well. This concerns me.

I've looked into the DSS axles but can't justify the costs. At this point I'm looking at adapting a stronger oem axle and hub or possibly making new uprights for it. This will probably be more economical especially if it's made from oem parts.

For gearbox we're using a J160. If at all possible I'd like the rear end to be stronger than the transmission.

Anyhow, assuming all the geometry is stock do these puny little axles even stand a chance? Opinions based on experience are much appreciated.

This is an older toyota axle next to FRS. Pretty much all years of 8" axles have the same inner and outer splines so there are many different axle lengths we can try out:

Basically we're working on a solution to adapt that bearing. Even if it requires new brakes it could be worth the effort. We also tried a few different side gear shafts from various toyotas and they all worked. Here's the diff with cressida shafts:

What happened to the diff that came with the car? What does the FRS diff give you that the original didn't?

It's a 1978 Corona so lots of stuff :)

Ah, fair enough. There's always room for an upgrade. I saw the car in back and thought it might have been that one.

Yeah I shouldn't have had it in the pic. I'd never drive a 240 lol. Been drifting 10 years and never thought about it once. I hate them :D

This whole thing came up because the other guys on my team have 70's cars. I like toyota so using FRS parts in a 70's thingy makes sense.
