sorry, if this has been asked, I did a quick search,


are winter tires absolutely necessary, or are all-season stock tires okay?


not looking to have the best traction/grip in the winter. just need to survive/save money

because you live in boston, i would highly recommend winter tires. especially for a rwd car...

Winter tyres are getting so good that the best ones are out performing all-season tyres until around the +10C point (when you should be running summer tyres anyway). It's actually worth getting winter tyres in the UK & running them once the temps are constantly bellow 5C which is saying something when we typically get snow for 5 days/year. You'll also find that you can run much wider winter tyres on snow than all-season tyres.

Unless you can take the T to where you need to be, you absolutely NEED winter tires in Boston. Otherwise, you'll be a danger to yourself and others. As we get closer to freezing temps, you'll start seeing more threads about wrecked twins and how they were on stock or summer tires. Don't be one of those owners.

I delayed putting on winter tires then the first snow storm hit. I literally , omw home from work in the storm, pulled into an NTB and had them put some on I was lucky that I could even get to ntb. Those stock tires are summer tires. Its like using sneakers in an ice rink

A set costs about as much as an insurance deductible and less than what your rates will go up.

Dont be stupid

Some of them come with a no cost option code AS, which gives you all season tires. They would be better than the standard summer rubber, but I would still absolutely go with a set of winters. If anything, you'll put less miles on your regular tires and at the end of the day it really won't end up costing anything due to the trade off.

I could have sworn I saw a new Monogram w/ all-seasons, but never saw that option available on any of the online model builders for scion or subaru websites.

Wait aren't the stock tires technically all seasons? I think that's what I was told...

Regardless I got some Michelin X-Ices. In the stock tire size they're hella expensive ($750) , but I'm hoping it's worth it...

Depends on which stocks came on your car. Most of us got the Michelins which are summer performance tires. Some markets sold them with all season bridgestones or something.

Pretty sure that only FR-S's come with Bridgestones, but no idea why. They're not an option either. The last time I spec'd one out on Scion.com, it said it came with AS rubber.:iono:

Oh mine did come with Michelin Primacy HP which I guess are summer tires. I think my dealer just mistakenly told me they were all season.

and do you guys know a good place to mount/balance tires for cheap?
I called around and found a place for 28 a tire but that still seems steep.
