what do you guys think?!?! i know i know, s2000 blah blah, they are amazing cars, but i've always wanted a clean 1st gen RX-7. years ago i owned an 81' that was a rust bucket, couldn't pass this up!

MokSpeed 09-16-2014 04:33 PM

I don't see S2000s as anywhere near being amazing. That's just my opinion though. I'd say good pickup, especially if you plan on putting in the time and effort on these cars. Congrats on your sale and purchases!

eyedeez 09-16-2014 04:37 PM

Damn, that first rx7 is buttery. Nice come up! What are your plans for it?

i can tell you have never owned one, they are amazing handling cars, for sure, and one of the best 4cly engines(imo) around :) sad to see it go, but i've wanted another 1st gen RX-7 since i sold my 81 rust bucket years ago

i probably going to keep it mostly stock, as of now all of the emissions crap has been removed. it has a full racing beat exhaust, nardi wheel, and i have a drop in K&N to toss in it, other than that, she's all original besides a paint job a few years back

I really want an FB RX-7, there's an '84 near me with a claimed 55k miles that looks like it has near perfect bright red paint for $4,500, so very tempting to jump into a car I can have just as much fun as an FRS for 1/5th the price.

I know the >'83s are better, but the SA's can look really cool...

headlights go up headlights go down

Edit: Would love to hear your thoughts on the differences between the RX and the Toyobaru, I am seriously tempted to sell my FRS at the moment, pick up that RX7 and get a nice daily for the SO with the cash...

Edit 2: Fuck that red one sold :(

the RX and the frs are really nothing alike, the rx7 is RAW, and when i say raw, i'm talking about that feeling when you step on the brakes, and you aren't too sure if they are actually going to stop you, no seriously lol, no power brakes are strange to get used to. other than that, mine has a little bit of steering slop that needs to be taken care of. they are fun little cars, but you do feel REALLY small on the road, it amazes me how much narrower this car is compared to the s2000

i mean, its a great little car, but not something that i'd drive everyday, as when i get out of the car, i smell like i've been riding a 2-stroke snowmobile for hours haha, i'm sure my coworkers love it!

surprisingly they are still worth a good amount when clean, NADA rated this RX at 6,600 or something, so if you can find one for under 5 with no rust, jump on it. i'm the 5th owner of this car, and i can tell she's been babied all her life, even the original seats are still minty, other than some sun fade.

my decision was also helped by the fact a few of my friends have 7's, there's another FB(my old one a friend is rebuilding) another friend has an FC vert(in process of rebuild) and my other buddy has an FD, amazing car. this was just the right car for me, its got all the mods done to it that i would have(dvd/nav, HID, emissions delete, trendy nardi wheel, racing beat exhaust, mechanical secondaries) done in the long run, so it was a no-brainer, when i looked at the car, i knew i had to have it, it was one of those moments

in all honestly, i'm going to be 32 this month, and i cant see myself driving around a loud yellow honda anymore, now a loud old 7, thats another story :), i've noticed(yes in one day) that its not the girls that turn their heads anymore, its the old men, so i'm going to have to get used to that haha. I did have a guy in a 280Z wave frantically at me yesterday!

personally, i wouldn't get rid of your frs for one, if its just going to be a weekend cruiser, then go for it, but i doubt its something you are going to want to drive everyday

i'm sooo tempted to hook up the headlights to separate switches so i can wink at people :)

The 2nd RX-7 would make a great race/fun car. Stripped out, cage it, and just have fun with it. Clean one would be a to drive around and cruise.

12A or 13B?

malave7567 09-17-2014 09:37 AM

Since he said 1984, i'm going to go out on a limb and say 12A. I'm pretty sure the only 1st gen to get the 13B was the 1985 GSL-SE.

OP, great find. I really miss my FC, and given some time, would love to find one again. My friend still has a nice black SA (1979)

its a 12A, 84 did have the 13b option in the GSL-SE also actually. i'm happy with this, with the things done to this one, it has more power than a stock NA 13b as of now, its all good :)

a few friends and i have been kicking around the idea of throwing a 350 chevy into the "parts car" just for shits and giggles, we shall see ;)

I had an 84 GSL-SE, and a friend had 3. He was a hoarder... :)

malave7567 09-17-2014 09:47 AM

Nice, thanks for the info. I wasn't aware the GSL-SE was a two-year model.
