Footwell Illumination - Door sensor and switch toggle
Hey guys, so this is my first write-up, so bare with me here.
There are many options as for how to go about doing this. What you will need: + LED strips of your choice, I got these- [ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00K6L2X94/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1"]Amazon.com: 2013 Subaru BRZ Footwell LED Kit, Cool White: Automotive[/ame] + A single/double pol, double throw switch (SPDT/DPDT). I got mine from radio shack. Make sure that one side is normally open, and the other is normally closed. It can be a rocker or a push button switch. - http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...ductId=2062521 + Wire strippers + Crimps* -Some fittings for crimping. An eyelet, 3 receptacles (plugs for switch), 2 quick-splices, and 2 closed-end splices. + Soldering iron, solder, flux* + Something to cut thin metal, angle cutters should work. + Roughly 2 pieces of 8' wire and a piece of 12' wire, different colors preferably to avoid confusion. I went with 18 gauge I believe. *Optional depending on your route of doing it. Schematics: http://s2.postimg.org/h206i6r09/Schematics.png 1. So, first we start with disassembling. http://s22.postimg.org/cqgxbg0m9/IMAG0288.jpg http://s22.postimg.org/wjt145e01/IMAG0289.jpg http://s22.postimg.org/ke3ttqza9/IMAG0291.jpg http://s22.postimg.org/5pxiweo81/IMAG0294.jpg 2. So after you've got everything disassembled, we can get started. You are going to take your dome light off, and remove it completely. http://s22.postimg.org/qucsju7tt/IMAG0292.jpg 3. Removing this plug to pull it down. http://s22.postimg.org/9fskbkaox/IMAG0293.jpg 4. Being gentle, you can pull down the headliner a bit to feed your 12' wire through the headliner, and you're going to bring it through the dome hole and to the pilliar. http://s9.postimg.org/44j1elu1b/IMAG0296.jpg 5. Unwrap the electrical tape around wires and isolate the Light Green and Black wire. http://s21.postimg.org/vg5a4ktpz/IMAG0295.jpg 6. Secure your 2 8' wires to the pilliar near the pink and green wires, leaving excess to be trimmed later. Tape the ends of the 3 wires together to be tucked together. http://s22.postimg.org/nij34a5gh/IMAG0297.jpg 7. Start routing your 3 wires and the wires to the LED strip through to the drivers side. (Didn't take a picture, sorry!) http://s3.postimg.org/96qz25u1v/IMAG0289.jpg As shown: http://s22.postimg.org/gx6d4iplt/IMAG0300.jpg 8. Next, we will go back up to the dome and tie in up there and reassemble it. Bend the eyelet to a 90*, and put it on the backside of the bulb. http://s22.postimg.org/bhxn3jy1t/IMAG0299.jpg http://s22.postimg.org/ks9r738rl/IMAG0301.jpg 9. You will have to trim the back plate for the eyelet and wire. http://s22.postimg.org/etvxwupsx/IMAG0302.jpg Check for functionality before you put it back up! http://s22.postimg.org/9l5icpwrl/IMAG0304.jpg 10. Now over to the pilliar, where we splice. I spliced my blue wire to the green, and black to black. http://s22.postimg.org/6ah5cu6u9/IMAG0308.jpg And back to the drivers side, we're going to start finalizing the wiring. 11. Connect the blue wire (the one running to the green) with all the red leads from the lights, utilizing a closed-ended splice. http://s22.postimg.org/7umhb8f8h/IMAG0305.jpg 12. Connect the blacks from the lights, using a closed-ended splice, leaving another lead that you are going to run to the switch. http://s22.postimg.org/sg1934wtd/IMAG0307.jpg 13. Connect the wires to the switch as shown: Your normally closed side (off position) should be the wire from the dome light, so that when the switch is down, it will be on when your dome is on. The common on the switch should be the black wires from the LED strips. The 'on' position of the switch should be the wire from the green wire that we tapped into, that constantly has power, so when you flip your switch the lights will come on. You should also test your switch with a volt meter if you're uncertain what is what. http://s12.postimg.org/g80mmzdn1/IMAG0311.jpg 14. Before mounting your switch, check for functionality. http://s22.postimg.org/r8nbax6ox/IMAG0313.jpg This is where I mounted my rocker. http://s30.postimg.org/hl5alcowx/Capture.png If anyone needs any clarification on how to do this, ask and I'll get back to you as soon as I can! |

AG3NT_5CARFAC3, you would hook up the lights for the door sill to these closed-ended splices.

If the red wires from the strips are always spliced with the blue wire (from A pillar green) and the black wires from strips always spliced to the A pillar black wire, won't the led strips stay on all the time?
Unless I'm misunderstanding your post on which wires get spliced where... |
Looks Great! thank you for this

The Subaru BRZ OEM footwell illumination (though pricey) comes in blue or red (https://www.subarugenuineparts.com/i...b19c69437cdbed). I assume the hazard/clock connector behind the radio referenced in the install doc (http://techinfo.subaru.com/proxy/709...H701SCA100.pdf) is the same for the FR-S & BRZ. Does somebody know for sure?
