so...how did you guys decide?

how did you guys decide? its as simple as that but so complicated that im blowing my brains out reading through every single old forum existing on this planet called ft86club.com.:mad0259:

so yes, how did you decide which type of FI to go with? i want SOMETHING but idk because EVERYTHING looks and sounds good, every dealers job is to sell their product so how do i know which one is the best bang for my buck?

turbo? super? nothing? :bonk:

im still learning up lingo and googling each term as i read them so im pretty lost...this is not an immediate upgrade but either way, id like to do my research for a few months before jumping on a upgrade.

*if anyone is a daily driver and not a huge auto x person thatd be splendid as im more a daily commuter looking to join on events in a year or so*

ive read one persons testimony on a JR supercharger and it was great, any others like his??

In this for the replies as im also on the fence between turbo or SC and a daily commuter. I just havent been sold on one yet

I looked at the current Supercharger kits' dyno plots and didn't like where the topped out at. At the time the pople on the Vortech and Innovate were stuggling to even hit 300whp without corn. My goal was 320~350 hp reliably and safely without e85. I didn't want to be pushing the motor to the edge to meet my goals.

I want, need, and will have to rebuild the motor but, I'm positive I can get a good 50k out of the engine before then without the fear of it throwing a rod. When I'm good and ready.

I went Turbo, jumped on the FA20club wagon right before shit hit the fan, luckly my order was never charged and I ended up grabbing a FBM base kit.

There were a lot less kits then and some of the new SC kits seem impressive but, still struggle to push out 300+ without pushing them. /

Dyno chart... I don't drive at 7k rpms... Turbo it is

Easy. Track = SC. Daily = Turbo.

Draco-REX 09-08-2014 08:17 PM

Supercharged here. Positive displacement twin-screw from Innovate.

Why? This car was built from the ground up to be responsive to the driver's inputs. Anything that that runs counter to that seems to defeat the purpose.

2 things for me:
1) turbo track guys seem to be packing solid aftermarket cooling solutions: oil coolers, radiators, fans, shrouds etc which all add up to the cost and
2) I live in CA and no turbo will be CARB approved and I'm too old now to find a smog guy and pay him $200 each time.

As with the above posters. DD = Turbo. Track car, turbo can work but be prepared to shell out some money to cope with the heat. In the end I would still go with a turbo. 300 WHP twin looks great. I have an order with JDL for there base EL Turbo kit. Plan to add an oil cooler, a shroud for the stock radiator to support the slim spal fans, will cut the skid plate to allow for hot air to escape and I may even get a vented hood down the line.

My past 3 cars have been 240's (1 SR20 swap and 2 KA-T's). All 3 were DD's with 0 track time. I never had any overheating issues. If I had emissions to worry about then I would have chosen a CARB SC kit, just to stay legal.

I went turbo since that's what I am used to. I also like the power surge once the turbo spools, rather than the more linear power a SC will give you. Plus I prefer the turbo sound opposed to the SC whine.

I personally am looking at a SC some day, just because I've always preferred them and the way they work. Since I'm waiting until after warranty, I haven't done enough research yet to make a good decision.

I'm also considering a third, more unorthodox option.....

All personal preference. I've only been in one 86 with a SC and it was the innovate. It just feels like a slightly larger motor. Turbo gives you that magnificent torque kick. I did have a chance to track my turbo setup and it was fairly terrible, all kinds of overheating issues on the track even with just about every cooling mod available at the time. If you really want to track it I can't recommend turbo, but for the street turbo is much much more fun.

Turbo, turbo all the way.

Care to elaborate on this experience?

It was about a year ago at Thunderhill. Temps were maybe 65F max that day. I was running 91, FBM oil cooler, FBM radiator, GT2871, 15psi on the FBM 9:1 engine build. Radiator temps rose to stupid levels, near the red zone after about 2 laps. I'd take it easy for a lap until cars would catch up, push it for another lap, get right up close to the red. I didn't bother on the last session, just couldn't have fun staring at the gauge. Not sure what the oil temps were. Either way, I went in for a turbo swap to the GTX3076R a month later and found out the head gasket was blown. I had the shop replace the head gasket, replace leaking oil cooler lines, ceramic coat headers, DP, OP. It stays cooler on mountain roads but doesn't like stop and go when it's 90F.

Anything that a supercharger can do, a turbo does better
