So 2220 lbs and 200 horsepower?
Holy crap, that'll be a rocket of a Miata off the floor. And I'm thinking if a tuner can squeeze 250 whp out of the engine, you'll be looking at a better power:weight ratio than the 5.0 Mustang GT. |

it'll be like a K car. 600cc turbo light as hell.

New Mazda Miata MX-5.
There's an article and a rendering. If it looks like it does in the photo, i may barf, personally.

Damn...not a good time to be a Miata owner.
Miatas were never really good looking cars, but nor were they ugly... |
I feel like I've seen that before a long time ago...yes, it makes me want to barf.
But reading the story, I found this funny: "Pressure for more power from overseas markets (especially the U.S.) forced Mazda to fit a 160-hp, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder unit in 2005, something chief engineer Takao Kijima reportedly did not want to do." Oh no, the big bad 'muricans want a bigger engine! We had to put a 160hp 2.0L engine in! Screw them! Maybe if your 1.8L wasn't such a turd you wouldn't have to do that. 140hp is how much power Toyota and Honda's off the shelf run of the mill cheapo engines make. Anyways, I like that they're trying to downsize with the 1.5L Skyactiv, but tuners are going to be unhappy because if the 1.5L Skyactiv is anything like their already existing Skyactiv engines, 125hp is probably about as much power as the engine will ever make thanks to an ultra long stroke. |
Ugly or not, if it actually weighs 2100lbs., it will be a blast to drive.
|
My old NA was around 2000lbs. really fun car....more fun than my FRS.
|
Kei car anyone?! Not a big fan of the render; however, until I see it in the flesh I won't judge too much.
|
Motor Trend is a little slow. That picture has been around for a long time. I forget when I first saw it but it was over a year ago.

Dear Mazda: DITCH THE SMILEY FACE!

all this jazz is old as dirt. that article is from august 2011. the miata will be fine. as far as i know its the longest running sports car and the healthiest convertible the world has ever known. im sure the nd will look fine

My gf wants to buy the new miata when she graduates. This motherfucker better not look like this. Make the miata a tad more masculine so that I'll feel comfortable having it parked in front of my condo... VW did it with the Beetle, I'm sure Mazda knows that most Miata drivers are male. |

In fact, Acura has a similar (probably even worse) problem. I see more Lexus ES350 (rebadged Camry yea?) and old Acuras than new Acuras. Get rid of the chrome beak already. |
That is an old article. I am sure the styling will not be as dated looking as that. If it is, then you can always take a look at the Alfa version. More importantly, if they manage to keep the weight under 2200 Lbs and give the engine 160+hp then the car will be a great ridge runner, autoxer, track car and competitor for the "fun to drive" crown that the FR-S/BRZ currently owns.

http://gtchannel.com/blog/all-new-mazda-mx-5
http://gtchannel.com/sites/default/f...ter_v2_SO2.jpg Mazda's 4th generation of the "Miata" roadster—the lightweight, rear-drive purist's paradise which resurrected the genre back in 1989—has begun development on an all-new model, slated for fall of 2014. Badged the MX-5 once again, same as the current car, the recipe for sound mechanicals built on a lithe, compact chassis, cloaked in a stylish body that somehow appeals to both men and women alike, will remain intact. In fact, after 23 years of the model’s existence these attributes seem to be gaining favor with more drivers. The evidence is not only on display in the dealer lots of some of Mazda's competitors who are putting out their own versions of an affordable rear-drive sports car (anyone say Scion FR-S or Subaru BRZ?) but contained in our intel which says that Mazda itself has applied a project mission and working title of "Downsizing and Less Weight" to the new car's synthesis. They know that a good number of customers still drive, and treasure, the original Miata whose light tossable nature made it a favorite among purists. Though not a quick car by today's standards, that first-gen roadster was well-balanced and tidy, measuring 155.4, 65.9, and 48.2 inches in length, width, and height, respectively, and weighing only 2182 lb. It came with a 1.6-liter inline-4 engine making 116 bhp. Flash forward to the current 3rd generation model, introduced in 2005 powered by a 2.0-liter inline-4, and measuring 157.1, 67.7, 49 in. (length, width, height, respectively) and weighing in at 2498 lbs., and one can see that it has grown over the years. From our sources, we hear the new roadster will come powered by a SkyActiv 1.5-liter inline-4, with a 1.8-liter engine as optional. The 1.5 will make about 125 bhp, and the 1.8 version approximately 140. Fuel economy for the new chassis/powertrain combinations is expected to be much improved, and there is also talk of the U.S. getting a 2.0-liter engine making 150 bhp. With an overall width of 69 in., and a curb weight trimmed to less than 2000 lbs., the car’s stance will be sportier, and it will certainly be a lot lighter with a much better power-to-weight ratio to boot. Mazda wants to keep the price around $20,000 or less. The Japanese yen has fallen to 82 yen/dollar this week, but if it can get back up to 85 or perhaps 90 to the dollar—since virtually all Mazdas are built in Japan, and a strong yen has hurt business here in America—then things will look good for the Hiroshima-based company, and even better for MX-5 buyers. It's important that this platform be economical, as well as a driver’s delight, because, it will also serve as the basis for the next Alfa Romeo Spyder! Although the structure and powertrain will be shared, Alfa will be building their own unique body, so its version should look quite different from the edgy BMW Z4-like styling shown in our digital illustration. The Alpha Spyder is likely to launch 6 months to a year after the MX-5. We eagerly await both, although the Spyder may not make it to our shores. |

Goodbye FRS, hellooooooooooo MX-5!!! Lightweight cars FTW! Seriously... I doubt they can get it that light without expensive materials because the 20 government mandated airbags are heavy! (exaggeration to prove a point). |
4th gen ND Mazda MX-5 Miata
http://wot.motortrend.com/1401_2015_...v_engines.html
And here we go! Good time to be a mini sports car buyer! So many good things coming down the pipelines. Rumoured 240Z and now confirmation of the next gen MX5 (confirmed because Alfa Romeo said they would unveil their 'equivalent' Spider in 2015 as well). I swear if this keeps up, I will shed a tear. |
Good.
Though i'm more excited for the Spider... |
Wow this is great news! I wasn't expecting anything from Mazda for awhile. Both Mazda and Alfa have been dragging their feet with their projects (Especially Alfa).
|
Article now states that unveiling will be at NEXT years auto show circuit.
Not sure how they can fix flagging sales of the NC unless they create something unworldly or outrageously awesome, all early indication is that this is a minor step, shed a couple hundred pounds, more advanced engine maintaining current power outputs with increased fuel economy. yawn I'm sure it'll be a great car, I hope to drive one someday but it's not going to set the world on fire. |
Crap I didn't pay attention to the year. WTH Mazda/Alfa? Is Derrick Rose running things over there?
|
That's still over a year from now. It's kind of silly for them to announce that they're going to show it at NEXT year's Chicago auto show right before THIS year's show. LOL
|
I'm pretty sure I typed 2015 into the subject header guys :P
I think the mistake is that MotorTrend and the other press heard "Chicago AutoShow" and automatically assumed 2014 but then Mazda and Alfa had to quickly correct them. Yes, it's a year away but now the question for me is: do I wait another year, build up even more cash and investments and then see? So friggin' painful... Like @Dezoris said in his video (to paraphase): the FRS is like a cheeseburger. Everyone stopped making them and then suddenly Toybaru come out with a McD's cheeseburger and it's awesome cuz you haven't had one in years! Then BK comes out with a new one but this time, it's got all the toppings AND it's charbroiled! God, I hate myself. |

I kind of hate you too. There will always be something to wait for, especially if you believe every clickbait blog article. What if the new STI has a two door variant and an FA25? What if the RX7 is going to slide in under $35k? What if the IDX Nismo is more than you could ever dream for? Either you're shopping now or your not. Don't base your decisions today on rumors about tomorrow. I wonder what if I had waited for the Fiesta ST to comeout? Doesn't matter, I bought the best car available and it still puts a smile on my face. Is a BRZ STI or Alfa Spyder going to diminish the fun I have in my FRS? Probably not. |

This is confirmed to be coming and I've long liked the MX5 and was rather annoyed at how long Mazda took to launch this especially given the Twins gobbling up all the press. I never like making a decision when the options aren't as plentiful as they should be. We'll see soon enough. A car isn't a logical purchase - especially since this will be my second car in the stable. Nonetheless, I think 'hate' is a bit 'arsh don't ya think? |

Not really, you're putting yourself in a position due to your own indecision. It doesn't matter how much of a sure fire thing the Miata is, it doesn't exist today. If you always wait until tomorrow to see what's next you'll wait forever because there will always be something coming up. So in 2015 the Miata is unveiled, at best for 2016 production. What's to stop you from waiting to see if the refresh for the Toyobaru brings something 'better'? If you come here and whinge about a position you've created entirely on your own I don't know what kind of sympathy you can expect. Have your cheeseburger today or in two years, doesn't matter to me. You've just gotta look at the situation, is the 2 year away cheeseburger going to be so much more fun that you will have less fun than the cheeseburger today? Will it make up for missing two years of cheeseburger eating fun? Why can't you have both cheeseburgers? Go buy a used NC Miata today (hell even a Toyobaru), you'll lose what, a couple thousand on resale over two years (doesn't sound like you'll put a ton of miles on it)? Trade it in for a downpayment on the car you want in 2016 (toyobaru, ND Miata, Kia?). You said it yourself, it's illogical so it isn't financials driving this decision, it's your own hesitation. |

Best of luck, hope whatever you end up with makes you happy. |
They have to fix the styling, seriously. But then again I'm more interested in something mid-engined and don't really care either way.
