Man our cars are soo toast. Jalopnik article says they can run on 87 octane. I can see a simple tune on 93 octane and they will be close to 200hp on a 2400lb chassis

Toyobaru better get there heads out their @ss and do the same thing with this motor and use lighter internals ect. that mazda did. A 5hp bump ain't cutting it |
I'm actually back to where I was about a year ago. Stuck between this new MX5 and a new 86/BRZ. STI is back to stock and I'm really wanting to go back to a small FR car around the end of the year.
I liked my old FRS, but there were some things I wasn't a fan of that have since been corrected. I'm a big fan of the new 4.3 gearing and the updated interior for sure. Not to mention the other small changes they've made with the engine and transmission. Feels much nicer out of the box compared to my old one. At the same time, I drove an ND a couple years back and fell in love with it. The top down experience is so fun, even for just simple commuting. I love the engine of the MX5 more than the 86/BRZ without a doubt. The transmission issues are really not an issue any more with the most recent version (v4) from what I've seen. The one I drove had an exhaust and tune and felt as quick as my old FRS with headers, intake, exhaust, and tune. The fact that they added 25hp more and increased redline from 6.8k to 7.5k to this means it's even better out of the gate. I'm also really happy that they finally added a telescoping steering wheel. At the same time though, still no glovebox or real storage in side the car. The trunk is more useful than some may think looking at pictures, but definitely not as good as the 86/BRZ. MX5 will never be as practical as the 86/BRZ. But now, my wife has a Tacoma instead of a Focus, so the need for a load of cargo/passenger space isn't necessarily a big deal anymore. Daaaaaaaaammmmnnnn! What to do? |

I had an NC and I don't care if it had another 100 hp I'd still take an 86.

It sounds like the ND is what you really want. You don't need our permission, man, go for it. Quote:
I'd take an 86 over an NC, too. The ND is just so much better. I had recently bought my first Miata, an NB, when the NC came out. I was mega excited about the NC until after the test drive. IMO the ND fixed everything wrong with the NC and kept everything that was good about it. |

Hopefully Toyobaru will give us a 250hp 2.4 though, we deserve it ;) |
I just read about the engine changes, this seems like a winner as it now has a pretty clear performance advantage over the twins.
I really like the engine upgrade, as they did it on the cheap. Damn, I kinda want one... |

I checked here : https://www.roadandtrack.com/new-car...-details-news/ It looks nice job. |
Sounds to me like the engine had a lot of room for improvement to begin with. I always wondered why the ND's redline was so low compared to previous Miatas. It went from 77.5 HP/l to 90.5 HP/l, a 17% improvement. Still 13% off what the FA20 makes with the same redline though.
People love to shit on the FA20 for not having enough power, but for its displacement it actually makes a lot of power, it's way up there for naturally aspirated engines. It didn't make it into Ward's 10 best for nothing. The fact we got such a well engineered motor in a 25K car is pretty impressive. Any performance advantage the new Miata has over the twins now is purely due to weight. Then again if the Miata had rear seats and 10" more in the wheelbase that edge would be virtually gone or maybe even flipped. |
