Why the low torque?

:thumbup:Good day guys and girls,

I was wondering about the torque figures on the Toyota86/ Scion FRS. Can somebody explain to me why they are so low at 205 Nm? I dont have an issue with the power as 147kW is sufficient for daily driving as well as fun on weekends. :burnrubber:But the low torque figure indicates to me that this car has extrememly low pulling power.

Any thoughts on why this has been done? Initially thought that it was due to the low body weight and to resist burning out the tyres on take off.:iono:

This leads to higher revs required to spin the crankshaft to get the car moving initially. The gear ratio helps to even this out (3.58:1) but its still low torque going to the crankshaft. The other downside of this is that we have to change down a couple times when overtaking as the pulling power is just too low.

The concern is that cars with similar mass vehicles, especially diesels, the torque and pulling power is much higher. A 1.2l polo diesel has 220Nm torque.

So my question is: Why is the torque so low on these cars and what are the effects of it? :search:

There is no replacement for displacement.

It's a 2.0 lite N/A 4 pot. I'm not sure why anyone would expect anything more?

I would like to see the H6 from the 3.6r legacys in the BRZ. Now that'd be a BLAST.

how is babby formed?

200Nm from a NA 4-banger isn't that low. Comparing it to a turbo diesel is just silly, and if you want the explanation why and the maths behind it I'll be happy to provide it.

Add turbo, get torque.

To answer this question we must first know what a babby is.

Torque is the product of cylinder pressure and inches. The engine in our cars has plenty of the former, but not much of the latter.

BMEP, Brake Mean Effective Pressure, is basically the cylinder pressure calculated by dividing the torque by the displacement of the engine. I haven't done the math, but I bet the engine in the twins is competitive with other gas engines when it comes to BMEP.

Also, power moves the car, so when you're only working with 2 litres, you put all of the torque on the top shelf to get big power out of it.

Want torque??

Add boost.

Had a guy in a truck honk at me to get me to lower my window and talk to me. Complimented my car, looks great, etc. etc.

then the inevitable. "Does it go pretty quick?"

Me: "Pretty quick for a 4-cylinder" (at least I'm tuned, but I didn't say that).

Truck guy: "that thing is a 4?! ... Well your car looks nice man"

*light turns green*
