EcuTEK to OFT conversion?

Is is possible for a tuner who works with EcuTEK and OFT to do a conversion? I plan on going to an AVO turbo kit down the road but would like to start with OFT for a year or two. I've heard good things about the AVO tune but it is only available for EcuTEK and don't want to have to pay for two different tuning solutions.

You have to talk to your tuner and see if they can use OFT. Since OFT can use tunes from romraider and all your tuner needs other than that is the OpenFlash software freely available from the website, all the tools are available for all tuners to tune with OFT.

They're able to, they may just not want to. Talk to your tuner and see what the deal is.

OFT do not insert any license info into your ROM in the car. Unlike EcuTek

With Ecutek it inserts license info in ROM, if you overwrite it you need to get licience renewed from Ecutek, or pay for new licience. As I understand it you cannot transfer Ecutek liciences, so all you can on-sell is the cable.

The OFT just keeps a copy of your original Tune ROM in its memory (of tablet)

If you want to "unmarry" the OFT from your car simply write back your original ROM from tablet then erase tablet. You are then free to sell the OFT to someone else as a complete solution with access to tunes ect.

They seem to be quite easy to on-sell for this reason, they can also be on-sold to BMW Porche Mazda owners of supported vehicles.

I would buy OFT use it until your about to get turbo kit/Ecutek then unmarry OFT ,and sell OFT. Just make sure you unmarry OFT BEFORE you use Ecutek othetwise you will overwrite you EcuTec licience when you un-marry OFT.

I'm not looking for a tune from anyone, I want to use the avo tune that comes with the turbo. It's just that the file avo sends you is an ecutek file. My question is can I pay a tuner who already uses both systems to do a simple file conversion or is it a time intensive thing where all the tables would have to be copied manually?

The ECUtek tune is locked and encrypted so that won't work.

I really hope that the oft becomes more mainstream than ECUtek. These license fees are fees only because they have a monopoly on tuning and nothing more. Its a ridiculous charge to make money. Makes me sick.

I would venture to say that the OFT is more mainstream for the reasons you mentioned. I suspect there are several times as many OFTs on the road than any other tuning solution for this platform.

Ah, an expert...

I'm guessing you can tune using EcuTEK. Is there an easy way to do a file conversion?

Also, it was mentioned above that the ecutek tune is locked - I don't think that is true from everything that avoworld has written. They provide a base tune with the kit that can be modified by a local tuner for each car. Unless I read something wrong...

I am not familiar with ecutek user interface software. If you can open the tune and copy/edit the tables tables it should be possible.

Or if you can open the Ecutek tune in romraider if its a racerom probably not going to happen due map switching ect.

Warning Base tunes are just that a BASE just to get the car started up (literally), and maybe drive at low rpm a short distance to tuner, they are not a daily driver tune. They are NOT the same as an Open Flash (OFT/Vishnu)Tune which are off the shelf tunes and can be used straight up.

If you read the AVO thread what they call their base tune is a full fledged, thousands of mile tested in various conditions tune. If your car is exactly like their car (which is everything stock except the turbo kits) you should expect to be perfectly safe running their 'base' tune. If you have an aftermarket header-back exhaust I would expect to have to modify the tune a little.

Question because im not 100% sure if it works this way.

If your tuner does tune you on Romraider couldn't you take your map and give it to anyone because it doesn't have a licence issue like EcuTek?
