If all else was equal, would you buy an electric?

If all other considerations were equal, would you buy a full electric?

I just can't believe how deliberately ugly most electric cars are. I realize I'm not exactly their target demographic, but it'd be nice to see a little cosmetic sensitivity. The Nissan Leaf literally makes my eyes hurt. Only Tesla seems to have any design sense. If there was an electric car that rivaled our Twins in looks, cost, longevity, weight and performance I'd probably be onboard.

I ran across the Venturi Volage for the first time today, and the 40hp Michelin wheels that they use to power it. Maybe this is old news, but I haven't seen it before. Very cool sh!t. :)

I'm unsure.

It's a different experience, but unless it's pure speed...I'm not that interested.

The benefits besides torque from 0 is the only thing that truly interests me. The tech still has a long way to go.

Tesla is a great car. But would i take it over my RS7? Nah.

The model s is epic. The roadster is even more fun. Especially with the new battery pack coming out... 400 mile range!!!

They are just plain fun to drive. I would love to have a model x daily driver and my twin for the weekends.

There's a LOT of considerations to all things...

For all things to be equal there would have to be a LOT of conditions met...

The ability to charge it back up in 10 minutes... The ability to travel 300+ miles without a charge...

Charging stations on every other block...

You'sa be askin' for lots of stuff in order to be equal...

All the above conditions met, SURE I'd buy electric, me loves some instant torque...

IMHO...only Tesla is doing Electric well now.

The Volt is a POS...

Only thing is Teslas are very expensive.

Caveat...supposedly, Tesla plans on there being a smaller version of the "S" available by 2017 that will be around $30k.

Unsure if they will meet either of those goals...but I wouldn't bet against Elon Musk.

I assumed the Volt was junk too, until I heard Matt Farah talk about how it was more luxurious than a Rolls Royce Phantom due to it being dead silent in the cabin and better than the Model S because you never had to worry about running out of juice. The guy reviewed 150 cars last year and he loved the volt so much, he bought one with his own money. Pretty impressive, IMO.

That being said, if everything else was equal and I could get a parallel hybrid 86, you bet I would. But it would certainly weigh more + be more expensive which kind if ruins the car.

I haven't seen that review...I do like /Drive with Matt Farah though.

Come on guys, it's a hypothetical, of course it's not realistic, and of course he means literally everything is equal. I would in a heart beat.

I'd get an electric car as a people mover, if all else were equal. But for fun, burning liquid fuel in a noisy death trap is what gets the blood pumping.

f0rge 08-14-2014 11:18 AM

The lack of engine noise is what would get me. I love revving out a car.

The other problem is the quality of the gas-powered counterparts. A model S is a sweet ride but I'm not sure I'd ever take one over an M5.

I only said Yes because this could apply to Fuel Cell cars as well. Along with the fact that Tesla released all their patents to public domain recently, we may be entering the era of the affordable Electric Car (again) very soon.

Why, in your opinion, is it a POS? Have you driven one?

Model Citizen 08-14-2014 11:47 AM

If i could buy one in the low 20k range to use as an appliance for work miles, and stop filling a tank or two a week.

Yes.

assuming it could do 200+ miles a charge
