FI Owners: If you were to do it all over again, what would you do differently?

Hey guys, I've got a couple questions for people who already own a turbocharged or supercharged twin. What did you wish you knew before buying and installing your kit? If you could restart, would you have chosen a different one? What supporting mods did you realize were necessary, and which ones weren't? What are some common rookie mistakes and misconceptions when it comes to FI for these cars specifically?

I'm really interested to hear your responses and opinions. Please let us know which kit you have, too!

Not beat on my car daily on 18psi and do high speed pulls (stock block)

You drove your car on a daily basis?

On a serious note, it sucks to hear what happened. It always sucks to hear an engine go down. :(

Hahaa well whenever id drive it id be on my high boost map. The motor isn't blown (no cels, still runs alright but something is wrong internally and ill have a tear down soon )

Kraftwerks kit, c30, small pulley.

Wouldnt change anything so far, dont need more power, still have some headroom down the road, and the cars had the shit beat out of it on track, autox, and seen a bunch of dd since the kit went on.

I would have gone with a built engine from the beginning, and certainly a different kit.. most likely PTuning or JDL.

Oh well, hindsight is always 20/20.

12k miles of beating the piss out of it at 16-21psi and I am just starting to show signs of compression loss (my idle vacuum). Just in time for the winter rebuild.

I love the BRZ, but after I've calculated the cash I've thrown into it, I think if I had to do it all over again I'd just buy a different car that came stock with the power and driveability.

Which car though, that's the question.

Should have done flex fuel boost controller and heat coating when I first went FI but live and learn. Slowly working towards those, the boost controller helped a ton though.

How did the boost controller help you? I'm running just the wastegate spring.

I would do the same, Vortech 9psi, time for a high performance driving class, this car can be a handful now, IMHO perfect power balance with the linear power band and awesome stock suspension

Phantom ESC 1.5x on e85. The kits' incredible future tech, torque characteristics, price, lack of complexity and open minded user group have have made it the finest single mod I've put on any car.

If I could go back and do it again, I would of spent a bit of extra cash and got the Full Blown setup. It wasn't a money decision at the time, I was attracted to the AVO by the "OEM style setup" with a reasonable ceiling of 300ish whp. I should of realized that you can never have enough and just paid up front. Now I'm faced with selling the AVO to get the FBM and taking a bit of a hit to get a little bit more power.

Also, I would of installed the Oil Cooler as a part of the initial install since it took me about 3 days of being boosted to realize I needed it.

And finally, I would of got the GReddy Multi D/A gauge for Oil temp/pressure and water temp instead of the Innovate MTX D.

Im running full blown's base kit, if i could go back i wouldve went with the full blown premium kit with all Vbands because turbo bolts getting rusty sucks

Well you found the limit of the stock engine. :)

Glad we stopped on the dyno when we did, close to the 500whp mark on a DynoJet so you could enjoy the vehicle for a while before building it.

There definitely seems to be a limit on what the stock block can do, though it is pretty impressive.

Cheers,
