Pulled over on way home from dealership in our project BRZ...Wreckless Driving!

You guys will love this...we certainly had an interesting introduction to our new BRZ today! My boss and I had just picked up the car at the dealership and were on the way back to the office. We stuck a Go-Pro on the roof to document our first drive. We were traveling at the speed limit on a 45mph two-lane road. I slowed to what I estimate was roughly 30-35mph to make a left hand turn. There was a short line of oncoming traffic (also traveling at about 45mph). From the video it appears to be a landscaping truck, a minivan, and a police patrol car. They are highlighted with the red arrow. After making the turn I resumed the speed limit on that road (35mph). The policeman that was in the line of oncoming traffic quickly pulled tight behind us, and stopped us approximately a quarter mile down the road (you can hear his siren chirp in the video). His reason for pulling us over was that we were “driving recklessly.” He said we cut the landscaping truck off in a dangerous manner. After a brief discussion he let us go with a verbal warning. Watch the video on our site here. The light was green…plenty of room…not going fast at all…car did not slide or make any squealing noises, etc. The policeman mentioned something about drunk drivers, so I’m not sure if they were looking for people extending their holiday weekend, or if he thought we were doing something suspicious with the camera on the roof. Regardless, it was a shocking introduction to our project car.

So am I officially the first reckless BRZ driver in the country? You decide. If I am, I don’t think I’m very good at it!

In the coming weeks and months we’ll be posting our progress with the car. We have a laundry list of products we’ll be developing, with some big names in motorsports. Please like us on Facebook to keep tabs on our project as it gets underway and progresses.

Maybe because you took the turn fast? From the video it looked like you just turned left without any noticeable slowdown.. Or the cop just wanted to see the brz :)

JRitt 05-29-2012 05:57 PM

That's the thing...I actually did slow down a bit. I was going at a brisk pace, but well under the speed limit. Ah well...a good story if nothing else. Some of the other guys at the office suggested maybe he just wanted a look at the car???

stateless 05-29-2012 05:58 PM

You definitely had lots of time to turn. I think some cops are just assholes.

mattles 05-29-2012 06:02 PM

man thats a reallllly wide and nice intersection. If it was me Id have been probably doing 55-60mph and might have deserved a reckless ticket.

Anyways, Im glad you werent ticketed for something so stupid.

Darn kids and their 200 mile an hour sports cars...serves you right. Now get to making those performance parts:D

Go around Pizza Boy! :bellyroll:

We're on it...multiple AP Racing brake systems, Spiegler SS brake lines, Ferodo and CL Brakes brake pads, a couple different Scorpion exhausts, Nitron suspension systems, a bunch of track goodies...this is going to be fun. :party0030: Here are a couple of pics:

If that Landscaping truck jumped on his brake (or even tapped) it could have put the cop on you. It is doubtful that he could properly judge your speed at that angle. He was probably just fishing. (Or he wanted to see the car!)

This is what I was thinking - if he's not just bored or a prick, he was judging your actions by the reactions of the cars in front of him. Him seeing a blue sports car quickly turn the intersection (knowing your speed or not), causing other cars to brake... might have been enough for him to chase you down. At least he had the sense not to ticket you.

I'm actually quite partial to European brands (though I'm only familiar with 2 of those on your list), with regard to suspension and brake components. From my, admittedly limited, experience with European suspension philosophy, ride comfort is never sacrificed and performance is always top tier to boot. Rides are never kidney shattering and cornering is always flat. In my mind; perfect. Glad to know you guys are going to be an outlet for my bank account.

I'm sure there's a premium involved with those brands. BUT. You get what you pay for!

That's one thing I worry about with this car and why I may have to go with the max grip option over the stock fun sliding tires. When cops hear tires squealing, they automatically think reckless driving. My winter tires squeal more when it's warm out and one day I took a turn and my tires squealed a lot more than I expected but I was perfectly in control and had plenty of grip. But a cop pulled me over and claimed I was flying around the corner recklessly which is nonsense.

Subie 05-29-2012 06:48 PM

That was decidedly NOT reckless driving, but I'm afraid that you are guilty of wreckless driving.

trackmagic 05-29-2012 06:51 PM

I'm glad you did not get a ticket, but in a way it could have been fun.

Can you imagine breaking out that video after the cop tells the judge how you dangerously cut off the paint truck?

AshWilliams 05-29-2012 06:51 PM

What delivery truck?

I've taken turns faster in my PICKUP.

"Officer, there was sand under my tires, and I haven't fully gotten the gist of driving stick yet. Would you mind directing me to an empty parking lot of some sort so I may continue to practice driving safely?"

Then you wink and show some skin. Works every time.

Well that tells them that you're even more dangerous on the road. I told him I was absolutely in control and posed no threat to any other drivers - nor would I ever put other drivers at risk. And he said he was actually looking for people not wearing seatbelts but I caught his attention. He actually seemed somewhat reasonable compared to most cops I have encountered which are hateful.

ESBjiujitsu 05-29-2012 07:20 PM

man thats BS. No way you cut that truck off. Plenty of time to turn and a safe turn :happy0180: cant wait to see your future posts!

:bellyroll: much better!

I look much younger than my age (a good 10 years younger) and after many years without a ticket I was pulled over twice in two weeks for doing 6 mph over in a 40 mph zone (in a line of cars all moving faster than me) and 6 mph over in a 60 mph zone. Both times I was told by the cop that they wouldn't have pulled me over if I hadn't looked so young. Having a WRX probably didn't help. Neither cop minded giving me a ticket anyway. I can't wait to see what happens when I'm driving a BRZ which is slower but looks faster.

Jayde 05-29-2012 07:29 PM

Not reckless driving at all. Glad you didn't get a ticket!

Curious, but was that just wind noise with the gopro? Something doesn't sound right.

Lonewolf 05-29-2012 08:29 PM

Not even close...that's a normal turn...there is no way the truck had to brake.

By the way...are you guys going to work with anyone about a tuning solution?

MmmHamSandwich 05-29-2012 08:32 PM

Riding back from lunch with a coworker today, he got pulled by a state trooper for a bullshit reason and got a lot of attitude. Guess it was that time of month...

...quotas are due!

Just makes my already poor opinion of cops even worse... I saw nothing unsafe at all. I guess they are above the law. They think because they have been to a police driving course they have a clue about driving a car. They always speed, on duty or off, and just make my blood boil.

ngabdala 05-29-2012 10:51 PM

It's called not using your blinkers

bimmerboy 05-29-2012 11:15 PM

I love WRB but hate the attention it gets from cops.... my old wrb wrx was a cop magnet. Sucks because its such a nice color but it comes with a price.

Turbowned 05-30-2012 02:30 PM

I got spoken to by a cop, (rent-a-cop?) maybe, last night in a parking garage for going over the 5mph speed limit just past the entrance way, an area where pedestrians can't even walk. Seriously? There was physically no way that anyone was in harm's way, and furthermore, my car goes 8mph in first gear with ZERO throttle; I'm not going to ride the brake to get through the garage!! Let's get real, cops. And change the speed limit to 10, a perfectly reasonable speed to travel in a parking garage. I just acted shocked and apologized. No way Mister High-and-Mighty would've listened to me anyways.

tonystewart 05-30-2012 03:15 PM

Palm Beach County Sheriff deputies, my relatives, have described my younger daughters Scion FR-S as a ticket magnet

Next time... just tell him you really have to pee.
