C1231 - Steering Angle Sensor

Hi all,

Down to one final code - C1231; Steering Angle sensor fault. I've had the steering wheel on and off multiple times. Anyone know the correct way to fix this?

Bump - Any follow up on this?
@STS-V ?

I don't want to be a jerk, but he got banned. I'm not sure if he'll ever see that.

Interesting, and is hardly call that being a jerk.

Either way, does anyone know if this code differentiates between a broken sensor and one that needs calibration or was installed incorrectly?

Did anyone ever figure this out because my '13 BRZ is spitting out the same code.

This code appears for several reasons;
- the steering angle calibration is out of spec, can happen anytime a suspension component is changed, steering wheel removed, and/or if an alignment is performed and they skip the recalibaration steps.
- the steering angle sensor has a fault or is damaged, if you've had the wheel off are you sure you reconnected everything?, was the clockspring reinstalled correctly?

Diagnostic code(s): C1231
DTC detecting conditions: When the voltage at +BS terminal is between 9.6 to 16.5 V, a steering sensor error signal is received.
Common Faulty parts:
• ECM IG1 fuse
• Wiring harness or connector
• Steering sensor
CAUTION:
• When the steering sensor has been removed & or replaced, make sure to perform VSC(VDC) Centering Mode Calibration procedure.
• Before performing troubleshooting, check the fuse for this circuit.

Check wiring harness and connector (steering sensor power supply)

(1) Check the steering sensor connector for poor engagement or disconnection.
Criteria : No trouble
(2) Disconnect the connector D56 for the steering sensor.
(3) Check the case and terminal of the connector for deformation and/or corrosion.
Criteria : No deformation or corrosion.

(4) Check the voltage and resistance between terminals.

Voltage
Inspection terminals: D56-4(IG) - chassis ground
Inspection conditions: IG ON
Standard value: 11 to 14 V

Resistance
Inspection terminals: D56-1(ESS) - chassis ground
Inspection conditions: Always
Standard value: Less than 1 Ω
