DIY Oil Change: Brand of oil you use and method you use to jack/lift
 

Would like to hear from you what brand of oil you use and method/equipment you lift the car with.

Since filter is in the engine bay, some skip the lift and use fluid evacuator pump through removing dipstick tube to do the job. Not sure if this is oil leak proof in the long run after remove and reinstalling the dipstick tube a few times, anyone done it?

I made 2 ramps out of 2x10 to get the car off the ground, TGMO and a Toyota filter is what I put in it.

I just changed from whatever the dealership has been using to Pennzoil 5w-20 @ 26k miles. I'm amazed at how much more smoothly and quietly it runs. Really. I didn't expect it.

Method - Vacuum extracted what I could (9/10's at least). Back wheels chocked front and back. Jacked up onto two 3 ton jacks. Undid drain plug. A little, very sludgy oil left. I let it drain 45 mins.

I put on a fumoto valve. Next time I'm considering vacuum pumping from the fumoto valve. :iono:

I use whatever premium 0w20 full synthetic, right now it's Mobil1. Last time it was Redline. Any major brand top grade synth will be perfectly fine.

Here's my overly complicated 16 step oil change. (edit- this takes about 10 minutes moving leisurely).

0- Grab a beer
1- Crack open oil filter
2- Jack the front end via the crossmember an additional ~4-5" of height (can't remember exactly but its not much)
3- Slide a low profile oil tray under the car
4- Reach my arm underneath to open the fumoto valve (damn I love this thing).
5- Remove oil filter while draining
6- Sip some beer
7- Close valve (did I mention I love this thing?)
8- Remove oil tray and lower car
9- Remove old filter and wipe out filter seat
10- Prime new filter and begin pouring engine oil
11- Sip some beer
12- Run engine for 30 sec
13- Sip some beer
14- Check level and top it off.
15- Pour oil into disposal container and clean up
16- Sip some beer
(Repeat step 16 as many times as necessary).

Toyota Synthetic 0w-20, OEM Black Toyota filter (previously Subaru made by ToyoRoki)
Jack up front at middle jacking point with low profile Arcan jack from Costco and Habor Freight 6 ton jacks on each side and leave the jack in place.

Rhino ramps with 2x8's or 2x10's or 2x12's (whatever's handy) in front for a pre-lift. Amsoil 0W-20 for the street, Amsoil 0W-30 for the track. Fumoto valve to drain oil with securing clip. Previously used OEM oil filter, but now use Amsoil Ea 15K 20. See my posts on the subject here:

I don't remove the dip stick tube. I just put the hose right down it until I meet resistance. Works like a charm!

I used Castrol Edge / black bottle synthetic, this was my first DIY oil change. Engine seems a bit different on this oil from the OE / Subaru dealership oil. Louder, deeper sounding for one. It's ok but I wonder if it's to the right spec I need in this engine.

What you need:

6 quarts (5.5 quarts spec) synthetic 0W-20. Oil funnel. OEM Oil filter. OEM Oil Drain Plug Gasket.

Rhino ramps, and also a 2x4 to prop up the wheels to not scrape, rocks or bricks to block the back wheels. Oil drain pan, and an oil recycle jug.

extra: shop towels, fast orange (hand cleaner)

Millers Nanodrive CFS 0W-30 NT
6.5 liters with a Perrin oil cooler, OEM oil filters

Jack stands, and Fumoto F108-S valve and plastic nipple +tube going straight into a recycle jug.

Couldn't be easier with less cleanup. Just wait for the car to completely cool down and the oil in the filter to drain out before removing it.

Also fumoto valve here. I used 5.5 quarts of royal purple 0w20 and a royal purple filter.

Anyone else put 6 qts in? After the full 6 qts, oil level was right at the full line. Did let it drain for quite a while and have a lift. Been running fine since (3k miles), so I would imagine there's nothing wrong with a little too much, but figured I'd ask.

I put around 5.8 qt as manual recommended
i put 2 x 10 ramp i made then use jack to lift vehicle up from middle jack point

How many of you are running the Fumoto valve?


No concern about it impacting something at stock ride height?


Any photos of how far it sticks down?


No chance of it leaking?

If my fumoto is hit by something, I've got bigger problems than the fumoto. Its almost recessed into the skid plate.

No leaks in the past 2 years.
