How hot does the engine get?
First manual car, first car really. Quick question regarding the amount of heat released from the engine. How hot does your guy's car get? My hood is pretty damn hot to the touch, and none of the cars I've driven (parents) got as hot as the FRS does (2010 Corolla Automatic for example, I realize the FRS does not compare but I'm just offering an example). I'm worried about it a little and hope its normal. The needle is halfway and doesn't really go higher. I beat on it today, took it to redline a couple of times and its pretty damn hot right now, anything metal in the engine bay burns to the touch. I apologize if this sounds like a really basic/beginner/worthless question, but I'm just looking for an honest answer. The hood of the car stays pretty hot for a while, its been almost two hours since I got back and the hood is still quite warm. Just looking for some confirmation that its normal and nothing to be worried about. Again I apologize for a maybe stupid question.

For one, the hood is aluminum, naturally aluminum transfers heat faster(by a lot) than steel. Also, if you pop the hood, and look underneath, you will see there is very little insulating material(this is a good thing imo.)
As far as temps, in normal driving conditions, I usually see around 180-195f coolant, and anywhere from 200-225f oil. If your needle is staying in the middle, your fine. |
Not a stupid question, as it is a fairly large design flaw of this car. Not very well thought out heat ventalation. Yes the engine bay gets very hot. There are threads and solutions to fix this, if your willing to spend the money.

It's normal, this engine runs HOTTTT. You'll see your coolant evaporate faster than your other cars.

How hot the engine gets depends on a number of variables:
-ambient temperature -load and speed over time (tracking the car is different from city driving which is different from interstate cruising) -aspiration Given that you haven't given any temperatures (try Torque in the Android market, I don't know about an IPhone equivalent) we can't say if you are running normal temperatures or not. Unless you have had your hand calibrated I am suggesting it is not a very reliable indicator. :) |
How hot does the engine get?
1) Welcome to the forums (I see you joined a year ago but you hardly post)
2) The car is operating normally 3) Enjoy the car 4) Stop worrying 5) Close Thread |
Thank you for the replies, it's reassuring to know this is normal. Also thanks for the link to the other thread, will be reading up on that. I made this account a year ago because I really wanted the FRS after a friend got one, but never posted as I didn't have the car so I felt like it might not be appropriate to post. Got a 2014 FRS Whiteout in May and have been loving it so far. Just every little thing causes a bit of paranoia as I don't want to hurt the car too much or wreck it completely. Thanks again, don't know how to close a thread but I'll assume a moderator could do that.
