Was my car repainted?
 

So as some of you may know from an earlier thread, im currently dealing with a dealer whom sold me a certified car with some paint issues it should not have been sold as certified with. I'm going to their dealership next week so they can take the car and fix these issues (dealer is 3 hours away from me)

While washing the car today I noticed a couple of things for the first time.

1. What appears to be a blob of paint possibly, it wont come off, tried using my finger nail its EXTREMELY hard

2. 2-3 spots on the hood that look like heavy paint blobs that were clear coated over..

Looks like a piss poor attempt of touch up paint...

I thought maybe so at first, however looking at the other spots too its damn near impossible to tell in anything other than the right light and it feels smooth and gradual like it has clear over it..

Ive seen paint that was runny with clear over it and it looks just like that just more like a "blob" more than the runs.

That is on top of the clear. You can't get that much of a small, tall build up like that while painting/clearing a panel. Its touch up with clear over top. Definitely not sprayed on.

They would probably make it worse trying to "fix" them .... :(

THose spots im not so worried about. As I said not really noticeable if at all in the right light and if your looking for them. Just aggravating that every single time I spend some time looking at the car I find something that just irks me after I already thought I noticed everything.

Theres another thread w/ pics outlining the issues they need to fix (deep dent/ding with paint chipping and rusting in a few spots on the car). I have them by the balls at this point. I have been recording all correspondence with the dealer since this started. I have him basically admitting that some things may have been overlooked for the sake of certifying the car. Selling certified looks good for the dealer as they put it.

Park your car in sunlight. Walk in a large radius circle and look for blend lines.

That's touch up paint. If it feels gradual then it probably had a round of compound with a round of polish on top. Touch up paint HAS clear in it. It's part of the reason it's so hard to build up properly when repairing a chip. That's not a paint issue that effects certification.

Most dealerships use a tool to check if a car has been repainted. It measures the thickness of the paint. Uniform thickness in the .07-.09 range indicates factory paint jobs. If the variance is greater than .03 it warrants a closer inspection. Check all gaskets for overspray, check all body panels for vin stamp. If it has an "R" it's a replacement part that must have been painted. Run your fingers along the edge of every panel, they should all be smooth and free of the gritty feeling of overspray. Lexus/Toyota/scion permit up to two body panels with paintwork before flunking them. Touch ups do not count against those two panels. Neither do bumper covers. I used to work for a dealer so I'm very familiar with their process. By the way, Toyota does spot check them. And the fines for certifying a car that should not have been are extreme.


I don't think you have them by the balls, I think they are trying to work with you and aren't being ****s. You will probably get better service if you keep you're buyers remorse in check. You bought a USED car, it's not going to be a 0 mile unit fresh from Japan.

Ender, the pictures posted was simply something else I noticed. THe paint issues in which I refer to having them by the balls are more serious. IE This picture

Paint chipping/Rusting with 2 other spots behind it. Theres also a somewhat matching on the other side. That particular spot while it does not look deep is about the size of a quarter (slightly smaller)

This alone should have kept it from passing the CPO guidelines.

Also see this thread which shows more pictures. Theres about 5-6 spots on the car total. THis picture below being more severe, the others being borderline dings/dents. 1 per side is acceptable via CPO guidelines. Multiple gouges/scratches are supposed to be repaired properly etc etc. http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=70250

Unless the program has changed significantly, I'm not so sure.

To check for paint work, refer to the second paragraph of my earlier post. Check all seems, look for black vin plates, or in their absence an R stamped into the panel. If you have never felt overspray, it feels like fine to not so fine sand paper. If you feel it start looking for debris in the paint. I wish you luck and a happy resolution!
