Why do you mod your car?

Maybe this question ha been asked before but I'm just curious or have been curious for awhile. Why do some people mod their cars. If you don't track it or run on the streets (yes it's illegal/dangerous) then what is the purpose of buying performance parts if the car is not being used to perform? :iono:

i voted for the 3rd option but realistically i wanted something built the way i like it, something custom(ish)

For the same reason why people upgrade their CPUs or customize their android phone app screen. It's the drive to make something your own...some people do eventually learn what their mods are capable of and see the fruits of their labor. Others mod because it has become their hobby.

Saw this thread on a "new posts" search and felt it was too good to pass up even though I am out of the region. Great question! So far it looks like I am one of the few who voted in this poll.

Modding was the whole point of buying this car for me in the first place. I have been an instructor with the BMWCCA for years, and this car is a great starting point as shipped from the factory IMO. All the things I wanted — low price, rear wheel drive, limited slip differential, able to shut off traction control completely, simple and easy to maintain design, hard top, rear seat with some cargo space behind, and few of the thing I didn't — electronic do-dads and "assistants" of all sorts, complicated, crowded & inaccessible engine bay, two-ton weight, large body & wheels. Many of the attributes I find missing in modern Bimmers (and most every car as well).

I fixed the handling flaws (my perspective) and brakes with a few simple and inexpensive mods. Now the car is ideal for my use and ready for more when I have the cash. It is still my daily driver that can moonlight at the track on a weekend.

you don't need to mod it (much) if you want to go to the track

2.5 years of ownership and a FSB has been my only mod so far....

might change the pads next year or whenever the OEMs wear out....

:D

Any input is welcome from any region

I modded my car because its what i wanted to do. I've made my car sound better, look better (subjective) and i've made my car handle better.

don't lie you use it on the streets hehe or should i say awesome back roads

This is a good question. When I had my RSX-S I decided to boost it because I thought I just wanted a fast car. 500whp was a blast on the freeway but made daily driving it on the street horrible with the super short gears and lack of traction (FWD, Non-LSD). Now I am driving around a WRX(Stock) and I actually enjoy driving it around on the daily much better. I feel like my needs and wants have changed as I have gotten older. I am getting the mod bug again. Feeling like I wanna push the WRX to 300whp or so with some stance coils.

Where is the option for this:

Because all of the cool kids were doing it/peer pressure.

Is this just with regards to performance parts, or all modding? Even most minimal performance or handling upgrades can be felt during spirited driving - even if you don't intend to track your car.

People mod their car for the same reason gamers build insanely powerful computers that are three or four times more capable of handling all of the graphics, etc of the game that their playing while streaming, or running any other apps that they desire on top of that.

I think the answer is pretty simple - it's your hobby, and no one will really understand that better than you or individuals that share that passion. I think it's insane that some people will spend thousands of dollars on the most modern, advanced kayak and equipment for it just to go dump their boat in a river a few weekends out of the year, but it's their hobby, and it thrills them and makes them happy - and that is what our spare money and time is for.

Given how much time we spend driving, I don't think it odd at all that people will pour money into upgrading various aspects of their vehicle, or customizing it to fit them better; be it changing the feel of the suspension, adding a bit of power, etc.

Now, I'm not sure if you're talking about people who dabble in modding here and there, or if you're referring to turboing, SCing, etc - in which case I presume that the later individuals simply like playing with fire :D.
