fire extinguisher mounts?

People with fire extinguishers in their cars... Where have you mounted them?

Thanks

ToyoburuBRZ 07-29-2014 11:07 AM

I've only ever seen one and he mounted it in the center console - removed the cup holder and bolted the straps in there.

Can't remember who it was though

logoris 07-29-2014 12:17 PM

@Taro and I are working on a way to mount it to the trunk lid. I have also seen mounts that put it up against the front of the seat with a gap for seat adjustment

I have a 2.5 lb 1A 10BC extinguisher mounted to my roll bar next to the driver's side door. I choose this location because it is accessible after exiting the car. If the car is on fire I want to get out first and then not have to dive in to get the extinguisher.

I will try and remember to take a picture of it to post tonight.

Here's one in front of the passenger seat

Thanks for the comments. I think I'm leaning towards putting it in the center console where the cup holders are. For the most part it will not be in the car, it is just for HPDE days.

The Bracketeer UFEB1317 Universal Fire Extinguisher Bracket is now compatible with the Kidde metal cradle AND H3R Halon extinguisher cradles ... making it the prefect track-prepped addition.

Is that the H3R Halguard? I was thinking of mounting one up in my car. My buddy has his mounted on the side of the transmission tunnel on the passenger side. Worked well on his STI. I don't know if it will work for the BRZ.

Unless it is a dedicated track car mount it in the trunk where it belongs. In the event of a collision or roll over it WILL come out of the mount and turn into a tumbling bludgeon of death. There is no good reason on earth to need a FE in the passenger compartment of a street car.

I think the idea is to have it handy when seconds count.

My first Supra was NA until I dropped a custom turbo kit on the car. With 120k miles and running rich on some fouled plugs, the cat started to get gummed up then was glowing bright enough for someone behind me to honk me from the highway to the shoulder. They shouted something was on fire or glowing under my car. I jumped out just in time to see some part of the underside beginning to catch fire. Maybe it was built up oil or gasket material or something, but I recalled the guy I bought it from left a small fire extinguisher next to the spare. I quickly grabbed it and managed to spray the underside before any damage occurred. I was real lucky I had the extinguisher or the car would have easily gone up in smoke.

Did it work out fine with it in the boot? Yea. Would it have been faster inside? Maybe. But having worked EMS and seen car fires and been through that situation, having a fire extinguisher close is my personal preference.

Having watched crash tests with heavy objects in the car break lose and fly around I think it is foolish. I would have thought somebody that worked EMS would know that. Oh well, I put the warning out there and will not debate it any further.

I'm confused. You think it won't hold?

Nope I don't. Not so much the bracket to the car but the clamp that holds it in. Now if you can find a bracket that is crash tested then cool. Otherwise the trunk is where it should be.

Check it out. Tell me what you think. Says NHRA approved or something. My buddy has one and it looked stout:

Now that is one that is designed to be inside the cabin! No flimsy little flip levers to let go. Going to take up a pile of space though.

Yeah, it's an H3R Halguard HG250B.

I made an aluminium plate that bolts into the center console bolt holes. The extinguisher brackets mount to the plate. I did it this way because

1) It uses original holes. No drilling or screwing required
2) Didn't want to lose the ability to move passenger seat forward
3) For track days (and safety in the event of a crash) screwing a couple of self tappers into the center console is not strong enough.

Can't help but think that the center console was deliberately designed to accommodate a fire extinguisher, perfect fit, and the little recess for the trigger.

Another center console mount ... obviously won't work for most lol

I have seen a lot of THESE being installed in racecars as of late. Compact, lightweight and efficient. Unfortunately I had just bought a regular style one when I found out about this style.

This is an old pic when I still had an interior, but mine is currently mounted behind the driver seat with a braketeer mount. I like it behind the rear seat bc in order to get it I have to have most of my body outside the car. It stayed in place for my crash at NJMP and hasn't given me any issue.

That's exactly where I have mine. Almost like it was built for it. Perfect in the event of a fire either you or the co-driver can access without moving a seat or getting out of the car first.

I thought about doing a small production run of these packaged with an extinguisher. Reckon there would be a market?

This is my fire extinguisher, it is 1.5kg and has a hose.

In my track cars they lived within reach from my seat, in my street cars they live in the boot (trunk).

For car fires you really need a hose to successfully extinguish a under dash fire, or, to be able to jam it under the car or through the front grill.

For anyone who has had to actually use a fire extinguisher on a car fire you will understand my choice.

For the people who have not used a fire extinguisher on a car before, those small extinguishers that fit in your center console will most likely empty BEFORE the fire is extinguished, I put then in the same class as tow hooks on street cars, all looks, and pretty pointless.

Hopefully you will never need to use your extinguisher, but if you do, you want one that is fit for purposes and not just for looks.

Stay safe

Cool man. Thanks for replying. I'll see what happens. Might have to see if the gen 2 mounts are same.

I finally got around to making a nice mount that slides with the passenger seat. Attached to the seat base. For years I just had it attached to the adjuster handle with split collars but that’s a bit sketchy since it could potentially bounce in an accident and unlatch the seat. Feel much better about this setup. Could potentially make a run of these if there is some interest.
