Bolt ons without a tune - worth it?
 

I know this question is really a matter of "what do you want out of your car", but I'm looking for some opinions.

My BRZ is the first car I've owned that has a warranty, and being that it's my daily driver, It makes me happy to know I have that to lean on if anything were to happen in the next 3 years. That being said, I don't want to blow the warranty. And until there is a way to reset the "flash counter", I won't be comfortable tuning it.

Over the winter, I plan on doing some work to the car. Suspension is a no brainer as there aren't any issues when it comes down to warranty. Engine work on the other hand, is where I'm a little stumped. Id like to do the normal bolt ons, but I just don't know if I'll gain much of anything without a proper tune.

My "desired parts list" is pretty simple.
Uncatted UEL header (jdl or revworks)
Header back exhuast set up (undecided)
Drop in filter
Aluminum driveshaft
Perrin crank pulley

I know I'd feel a slight "pep" from the loss of rotational mass, but would there be a worthwhile difference in power?

While I love having a warranty, I can't wait for it to be over :bonk:

So i can actually relate to this up to this point. I have a header back exhaust and Takeda intake. I don't feel a whole lot more power, if any. What i do get is an amazing sound, which to me, is an integral part of the driving experience. I don't just want sideways motion, i want my car to sound like it's supposed to be doing the said sideways motion.

Now with that being said, i will be finishing the exhaust (tune) and getting an OFT as i do think the extra ponies will make this car even more enjoyable.

In my opinion, the sound is just as important as actual acceleration to the entire experience of the car. Installing an exhaust that you like the sound of will make the car more enjoyable to you.

Definitely go for a new drop in filter, since they're so cheap that there's really no reason not to get one. If you're worried about warranty, then I would avoid the driveshaft and pulley. It would be too easy for them to say it caused a problem, even if that part wasn't responsible, and convincing them otherwise isn't worth the effort.

I would say it is definitely worth it.

The noise created by a header back makes the driving experience much more enjoyable.

The driveshaft and the crank pulley will make the engine rev a little faster.

The only thing I see here that could be an issue is the header. If you are going to get a header you should probably get a tune.

The stock sounds from this car are not exactly pleasant.
Changing the engine and exhaust note (intake or filter and exhaust) makes the drive much more enjoyable.
You won't go appreciably faster, but downshifts and wringing the motor out just sound and feel better.

I would recommend the crank pulley for sure.

Is there any noticeable sound change from a drop in filter?

I put a perrin intake tube (Which deletes sound generator) and a K&N filter drop in my '14 limited. I can hear the intake better than I can hear the exhaust. And it sounds better than the sound tube ever did.
I would say the intake sound is 30% louder now. But better.

So essentially all I'll get out of it is sound? Mehhhhh.

With the Header in your list, I would get the tune. I am running a catback with no tune and will get a OFT when I have the money, then comes header and drop in filter, and maybe E85!

^ What he said, Lighter wheels would also be a good upgrade for you if your not interested in tuning. A header without a tune is kinda like throwing money in the trash cause you like the way it sounds. Open flash Tablet has a header and tuning combo for 1000 bucks, pretty good price IMO

Don't get me wrong, I will have it tuned on April 8th, 2017. So it won't be "throwing money in the trash" it will be "spending money now to enjoy later because boxer rumble", but I understand what you're all saying

You might have an issue with your warranty by just throwing a header on it. They will document the header if you bring it into the dealership and make up every excuse why changing the header ultimately caused your engine to fail if you ever had an issue.

I hate dealerships and would rather them not ever touch my car. My personal opinion is that if it's good after 10,000 miles Fuck the warranty! That's going to be a choice that only you can make though.
