Priming the oil filter

Hi doing an oil change today. Do I need to prime the oil filter or can I just put a little oil on the seat and screw it on?

I just fill it with oil before I put it on. Very easy on this motor since oil filter is directly on top, won't even spill a drop.

Overall though I don't think it matters too much or manufacturers would specify to do it in the shop manuals.

Considering the filter location and position when installing all priming it will do is make a mess.

i always prime my filters. just fill it and let it soak up for a few mins. Youll be amazed on how much it can hold then quickly install. without spilling. it can be done. This is really important on turbo cars so the turbo bearings dont go starved for oil.

Hi priming the filter worked. No mess! Yay.

I used about 5.5 quarts of synthetic total in the oil change, a little less than the 5.8 quarts subaru specifies. People are saying this is ok. OK?

check your fluid level, only way to be sure.

There are a bunch of idiots on this forum(myself probably included lol) so don't just follow blindly, plus its super easy to check.

I always prime and wet the gasket, but never fill it up completely, maybe half. With motorcycles, some people have had issues where not enough oil pressure is generated because of a big air bubble stuck in the filter, and it either remedied itself after 10-20 sec of idle or a throttle blip, or it had to be burped, can't remember... May be apples and oranges, but I don't like the idea of leaving any potential for that.

if you fill the filter with oil and then turn it over to install, how can it not result in a mess?????

Fill about 1/3 and let soak in, oil will saturate into material and you will be fine...

I don't know, it's just you do it in a quick enough motion turning it over and screwing it on, that barely any comes out.

5.5 is what I've been using, two oil changes so far.
