Quote:

Oh, the heady days of 1993, back when the Clinton Presidency was just getting underway, and it seemed like every hot new rock band was coming out of Seattle. Sports cars in the US had finally shaken off the shackles that slowed them during the '70s and '80s, and you could buy any number of legitimately quick vehicles again. MotorWeek recently went digging into its archives to find this six-model test from 1993 showing off some of the best semi-affordable performance coupes that money could buy at the time, and it's priceless.

Featuring the 1994 model year Toyota Supra in twin-turbo guise and MY 1993 versions of the Porsche 968, Nissan 300ZX TT, Mazda RX-7, Dodge Stealth R/T Turbo and Chevrolet Corvette LT-1, MotorWeek definitely covered all of the bases. One thing that might surprise younger readers is these cars' performance. The video only provides 0-60 acceleration times, but several of these vehicles would still be considered pretty potent today – over 20 years since going on sale. The Supra is especially impressive, hitting 60 miles per hour in just 5 seconds. Even today, that's nothing to sneeze at.

Given their performance potential and still-attractive looks, it's amazing that some of these coupes are old enough to drink now. The progress of interior design and safety equipment in the intervening years is pretty shocking, though. In most of these models, having two airbags is touted as a big deal. Scroll down to watch a Throwback Thursday blast from the past about some of the '90s best sports cars.

z32TT has to be one of my top 5 favorite cars.

Lots of room for improvement with just a tune and replacement of the restrictive aspiration. Stock turbos and internals can be tuned to 400rwhp easy.

RX7 hands down for me. One of the most pure driving experiences you can get, 20 years ago, or even now.

And it's pretty. I wish more cars these days were as pretty as an FD RX-7 or Mk IV Supra.

Agreed. However, it is interesting to really look at what these cars, that are so revered by today's car enthusiast, had to offer and at what price. In today's dollars the cheapest one would sell for over $53K and the quickest of them gets from 0-60 in just a little over a second less than the "underpowered" FR-S.

Sometimes the good old days actually turn out to be today.

Still, what I would not do to own an, all original, 1993-95 RX7.

2014 Porsche Cayman 0-60 5.3 seconds, $52.6k
1993 Mazda RX-7 0-60 5.4 seconds, adjusted for inflation $54.3k

The good days certainly are today as you can pick up an RX-7 at a fraction of that price.

Great cars, many memories.

I knew John Davis had slimmed down, but wow, didn't remember how much!

I don't need a video to tell me how awesome the 90's were. I just wish I was old enough to drive these cars brand new at the time.

Supra, for the engine and the fact that now a clean, low mile example is worth more than the original MSRP.

Found one with 28k original miles for $49k. Found another with 54k original miles for 42k. Mind you, these are STOCK and MINT. I'm beginning to think it's too much...just too much :/

2014 Porsche Cayman: 30-40 mpg on the freeway
1993 RX-7: <15mpg?

LOL

We haven't gotten to estimated time before engine rebuild yet.

If you can find one with an original motor.

Yep, and if it did not carry the Porsche nameplate it would cost $10K less.

While I respect, admire and lust over the Japanese supercars of the 90s, especially the FD35 RX-7, the FT86 is just an all round better performance car dollar for dollar and pound for pound.
