paint peeling? chipping/ rusting on fenders?

anyone else have this issue? Im taking it to the dealer on thursday for it for them to have their "paint tech" look at it.

Its by the corner light, chipped paint and some rust.

Do you mean a rock chip that exposed bare metal and then it rusted?

nickmerronesucks 07-23-2014 04:30 PM

No i dont think its a rock chip. my bumper is covered in those. this is like the paint is flaking off on the edge of the fenders where it meets the bumper.

I have a rock chip on the driver side fender and it rusted very quickly. It is located right near the head light.

The bumper is plastic...the edge of the fender (or the fender itself), is metal. Metal will rust.

Everything on the car except the front bumper, rear bumper, glass, and mirror covers, will rust if chipped and exposed to metal.

And hood. It's aluminum.

I believe it still oxides, but it flakes off. Not like metal rust though.

Word. I would have thought that the fenders and other body panels wouldn't rust so quickly as they are galvanized. I had several chips down to the bare metal on my legacy that didn't rust even after several years. (I don't know really anything about the galvanization process to critique)

Supposivly their fixing it.. waiting on their paint guy to get back from vacation on monday to see if their replacing the fender or just painting it.

Did yours look anything like this? This happened in less than 2wks (wasn't there when I washed her 2wks ago), and I didn't hit anything. The tire didn't bottom out and cause it, as the paint only starts peeling at the bottom edge of the fender. There's no indication of being hit, it's like the paint just "boiled" and then cracked. I live at the beach in NC, but the car is washed every 2-3 weeks, and every few days when we had brine on the road for ice. WTF gives, I knew the paint was weak, but this is ridiculous. Taking it to the dealership after work on Friday to have them check it out. Any guesses as to what it's gonna take to get this fixed?

wow! No don't have that and my BRZ has been through two snowy winters. When I got my car I did cover the insider of the wheel well (under the fender) with caulk to protect the paint.

Are you lowered? Wheel looks closer that usual to the body

Ashphalt_Angel 03-18-2015 03:39 AM

My guess is something flew up in the road and hit it. If not then it could be a factory defect.

There is an obvious impact mark right in the middle. You can see the stress cracks from it. I'm with the poster above, something from the road flew up and hit the edge of the fender just right and cracked it.

Yes! What ever cracked it let water in and it has been there for a while for the steel to rust like that. I have a bare metal spot from a stone hit that has been there for the whole winter (with tons of salt) and it is just now starting to rust.
