Spyder FRS Headlights with Halo wiring question

Hoping there are some electricians with FRS out there...

Just got my Spyder FRS headlights with Halo for my 2013 FRS and they look amazing.

I'm not an electrician, but the installation and soldering process seems simple enough. Currently I only have the passenger side installed and I solder the Halo with the DRL, so it would look like this during the day

but when i turn on my car, only the halo comes on... and the original LED DRL would only come on when I turn on high beam. The funny part is, if I disconnect the halo ballast (thus disconnecting the halo) the LED DRL would come on as reg DRL.

Does anyone know if i just wired it incorrectly, or if it is because the OEM DRL wire cannot support both the LED and halo?

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like you have not made the right connection. The stock headlight DRLs operate off a separate circuit that runs through a resistor to reduce the power so the highbeams are dimmed by half. When the headlights are turned on, the DRL circuit cuts off leaving the highbeam bulbs dark unless you turn on the highbeams. That is why your Halos are on and the DRL's are off and why he DRL's come on when you turn on the high beams. Most likely the resistor is soaking up what current is left over from being diverted to the halos not leaving enough to power the DRLs. I would like the same look as you, halos and DRL's on during the day but have not become aware of how to connect them for it. What I have done is tapped the halos into the power/ground wires to the ballast of the DRLs on the Spyder headlights using T-dap splices. This connection results in the DRL's being on with the lights off and being on (but dimmer) along with the halos being on when the headlights are on (either in parking/running or fully on). To get that look of both the halos and DRLs being on in the day I just turning on the parking lights.

BTW since you have the Spyder Headlights you should see this thread I posted about the UV coating peeling off after 4 months. I recommend getting some headlight protection film ( I used Lamin-x on the replacement set I installed).

Best of luck and I hope someone does have the info for connecting the halos so they run with the DRLs

Thanks so much Wizardhat, finally got the DRL LED and Halo to come on at the same time.
Turns out the wiring was ok, but as you suspected, the power wasn't enough to turn both lights on.

Not sure what did the trick, but once I installed BOTH lights and really secure the soldered wire using electrical tape.

Thanks again!
