Exhaust Upgrade questions
Ok, I have done extensive research looking into upgrading the exhaust system, and due to the incredible market saturation I am at an en pass. Eventually I want a full header back replacement, but my end goal is still to maintain at least one cat for the smell, while making what power gains are possible as well as increasing sound of the painfully quiet OEM system. For the present time I'd like to keep my budget to about $750 for a cat back system that will not need to be replaced when it comes time to replace the OEM heads and front/over pipe. The main problem comes in because my wife and I sold her awful ford sedan, and she took my 128i, and I got the BRZ. Now I have to listen everyday while she drives off with her M exhaust and the BRZ is painfully quiet.
Basically I'm looking for a catback, that won't break the bank, but will not need to be replaced when I get around to the rest of the exhaust system. |
AFAIK just about every catback out there will bolt up with an aftermarket header and overripe. That doesn't seem to be an issue. I could be wrong, but ive seen it mentioned a few times.

To clarify, I don't mean that they'll physically connect, but that the components will work well.
Also the immediate goal is sound, not sure if an axle back will be enough |
What type of sound are you looking for? We can't really help you decide on that. Do you want something loud?
Need more information. |
I want loud, but no unpleasant drone for dd. I don't want to go so loud that when I get to upgrading the rest of the system it gets ridiculously loud
|
If your going for sound, just get a 3" catback. Leave the stock mid and header.
|
If it is just sound, I was told the Berk Muffler Delete sounds pretty good. Check that out. Alot cheaper than an exhaust... maybe save up for a full upgrade in the future?
|
Borla takes my vote, if you stick around you can find one used around 400-500. No drone no rasp, and has a nice deep tone when you step on it.

Muffler delete looks to be about $300, rather spend a few hundred more and at least have a portion of the exhaust done
Time to scope out the classifieds I guess |

But you're right, if money isn't an issue, go spend a bit more! |
Nameless

So I've looked around more and it seems like an axle back is the way to go first and then upgrade the rest later. However none of the compilation lists I've looked at have any MSRP at all. Just a bunch of dubious quality YouTube links.
